“I’m calling for Sarah” said the voice on the phone.
“I’ve called to say I love her, and ask not to be alone.
I know that life’s been hard and words were bittersweet
If she’d accept my love, all time could forever retreat.”

Who was this stranger calling me in such distress?
“Sir, you must be mistaken, Sarah’s not at this address.”
“I’m calling for Sarah, if she’s sleeping, let her be
just be sure to tell her she possesses the love of me.”

A few days had passed since the mysterious call.
It felt so overwhelming as though a weight was ‘bout to fall.
I thought about it every hour till I heard a ring
And then that voice once again, whimsical, did sing,

“I’m calling for Sarah, I’m going to be out late tonight.
Please be sure to tell her I’m sorry about our fight.
I didn’t mean to yell at her, our hearts were open bare.
Tell Sarah I love her, and later, I’ll be there.”

Before I could say a word, the call ended into silence.
Fear was running through my veins, I felt my heart wince.
Plugging in my caller ID, I awaited for his voice
He would reveal his identity with/without a choice.

Later on that same night, the phone rang again
But it didn’t sound like the voice of that same man.
This voice was full of pain and yet something was gone.
“I’m calling for Sarah…” Silence, conversation done.

Looking down at the screen, I shuttered as I saw
The ID location of the last person who just called.
They must have had a perfect love, all hate and love- even.
For the letters that appeared simply spelled out Heaven.

I looked through the newspapers the Library keeps on file
And found what I was looking for shortly after a while.
Sarah and Tom McGraff young lovers in 1983
Torn apart in the cruelest way, an automobile tragedy.

They had gotten into a fight and Tom had drove away
To visit friends at the bar, she knew he would not stay.
Sarah took off in her small Ford Pinto car
To go to her mother’s who didn’t live very far.

Her car was demolished at the two-way stop sign.
EMTs tried to save her, yet she had remained flat lined.
It was discovered that a drunken Tom had caused the wreck.
His memory was lost that day due to trauma’s fortunate affect.

He called his own home every day from his hospital bed.
He had found the number in the phonebook, unaware his love was dead.
On some subconscious level, he remembered that mournful night
And calls to assure Sarah that everything will be all right.

The newspaper article went to say how he had died.
Seems his heart just wore out after all the tears he cried.
Tom McGraff never knew that years had come and gone.
His only purpose in life was to call his home.
