When you were little, did you look forward to the Fair
and think of the deals you'd get, 'cause you knew someone there?

CARNIVAL GHOST

When I was a child, I always loved the fair.
Seems I counted the days when it was not there.
The minute after closing time was the longest of most
Because I’d be haunted every day by the carnival ghost.

When I grew a little older, the love did not fade.
Something seemed to draw me there on muggy, humid days.
But, the minute those trucks pulled out and left our town park bare
Something inside me was always saddened by what was no longer there.

And every day would go by like the tilt-o-whirl’s spin
And memories would soar high like Ferris Wheel tin.
Something ‘bout the lights and the people, and atmosphere.
Something was just missing when the carnival wasn’t near.

The day of high school graduation, I shocked and stunned them all.
I picked up and I traveled with a small carnival.
And then I understood the appeal of the world so fluid now,
It had entered into my veins though no one understands how.

I no longer travel with them, the year is so much longer.
It made me a better person, and I know, a whole lot stronger.
My heart now serves a different purpose, it gracefully plays host
Because now I solemnly mourn my own carnival ghost.

I know the towns I used to go, does anyone remember me?
Does someone walk the midway and ask where I might be?
To them, I’m just a memory… as our signs fade on their post.
And I’ve slipped away with trucks and trailers and became a Carnival Ghost.
