Pooky, the Porcupine

Pooky was a porcupine covered with quills
He traveled mostly alone; living without frills
One day he met Penny, the peacock, strutting along
She was singing her “Proud to be a Peacock” song

He thought to himself, “What a beautiful bird”
but that was the strangest song he had ever heard
Penny arrogantly said, “What an ugly creature is he”
He has needles all over his back, “Fiddle Dee Dee”

Pooky said to the peacock, “What is your name?”
She said, “My name is Penny; you walk as if you’re lame”
Pooky said, “For a bird, you make a strange sound
My name is Pooky, this is the way I walk to get around

“Why do you sing that “Proud to be a Peacock” song
Pooky asked as the two walked along
I sing it because I am the most beautiful bird
in the land, and the song needs to be heard

Have you not managed to, far away, roam
away from the protection of those at home
Penny laughed in disarming glee
“It is time I was on my own and free”

Pooky picked up the scent of a mountain cat
How did the peacock expect to escape from that
Pooky knew the cat had one thing in mind
and that was “on the peacock” to dine

The cat was moving toward them at a fast pace
Pooky could swear he had a smile upon his face
The bird was screeching, making a terrible sound
He wished there were nine more porcupines around

“You must do something,” the peacock yelled
“If you don’t, like a tree, I will be felled”
Pooky waited until the cat was close
rolled up in a ball, and of quills gave a dose

The quills struck the cat in the nose and face
He was screeching, and hopping all over the place
Penny, the peacock, was shaking with relief
She stood looking at the porcupine in disbelief

At that moment, she saw Pooky in a new light
He was not ugly at all, he was an absolute delight
She decided looks may be deceiving even at best
Tonight, she would take him home as her guest

She would introduce him as her good friend
Their friendship might even start a new trend
It is not necessary for all to look the same
It is the heart and actions that deserve acclaim
