Oogala’s Growing Nose
There was an otter at Rubio’s pond
who was named Oogala Lafond
Oogala’s mother, Letitia, often said
"Telling a lie is something to dread"
"Lying makes your nose grow long
lying means you’ve gone far wrong"
Oogala listened to his mother’s words
then went off to play with the otter herds
Oogala thought, “Lying is not so bad;
what could you expect from an otter lad”
So Oogala told one lie after another
not paying any attention to his mother
One day his mother was brushing his hair
Sadly Mother Letitia had something to share
Said she, “Oogala you have been lying again;
your nose has grown almost to your chin”
Oogala looked into the mirror of water
His nose was longer then brother Boz otter
His nose was longer then any of his friends
He must find a way for all this lying to end
The next day he stood before the otter board
asking, “Will you be with me in one accord?”
If I tell a lie, please smack me on my tail
Promise you will all smack without fail
For me to lie, means my nose will grow
Where is an otter with a dragging nose to go
The nose will drag out each step of the trail
You must all agree to smack my tail
The otters, in unison, agreed they would help
even though it would cause Oogalo to yelp
An otter with a dragging nose would soon die
To prevent his death they would all try
At first Oogala watched carefully what he said
then it seemed, by some evil, he was being led
One day after Oogala told a really big lie
the news was shared with the otters by a fly
Each otter picked up a striking stick
gathered around him in a circle to give a lick
Whack, whack went the sticks to his tail
Oogala cried and yelped to no avail
“Sammy, the fly, said you lied,” each otter said
“Do you really want to end up dead?”
Oogala’s tail hurt ever so bad
but he was thankful for the friends he had
It took sometime for Oogala’s tail to heal
Each day the pain was a reminder he could feel
Oogala decided it was wonderful to be alive
With that decision, he took a power dive
He had learned his lesson on lying and deception
For him, no more lies without exception
He dived once again deeply into the pond
“Ahh, it is good to be alive,” said Oogala Lafond
