THE DECANTER

It was given to me when I was a small child
by a man I hardly knew, yet smiled
because it looked like a toy that I could roll.
That little, blue Volkswagen Bug
sat atop my bedroom rug
though better years have surely taken toll.

My grandfather gave the decanter to me
when just a toddler upon his knee.
He said that, the Bug, I should save.
I wanted so much to call it a toy.
A few quick rolls, I could employ-
My imagination was so amazed.

Not long after, my grandfather passed
and in that decanter, his memory lasts
though I'm a grown woman now.
I found the decanter in my old bedroom-
It's wheel-less body full of gloom.
...I could only wonder, "How?"

I still have the decanter old and broken
it's a legacy to me that lives unspoken.
I keep the blue, Volkswagen as a token
of a grandfather I wish I better knew.
