"Just down the road, ya surely can't miss it!",
Said the old geezer, while loosing a brown spit.
The miles went by, my scene, far from change,
Monotonous stretch, no landmarks, mighty strange!
Maybe turn here?! Spinning wheels, cows looking up,
Road turning to gravel, passing a dog, dodging her pup!
"Where am I?", My pitiful cry weakly slipped out,
Zooming past a sign -- I should go left, no doubt?!
That gravel now gives way to thick mud,
Studebaker wasn't built for... "WHAT WAS THAT THUD?!"
The exhaust now rocks and rolls my poor tired ears,
As bloodshot eyes see a muffler vanish in the mirror!
The day is far spent, as pelting rain now noisily parts,
And that danged exhaust sounding like a big string of farts!
I must keep pushing onward, or no one will find me,
Going no where beats heck out of rotting under a tree!
What's that ahead? My eyes see a faint glow...
A house? A light? Am I saved? I surely must know!
Tires crunching past outhouse, cornstalks and fence,
One last backfire, I weakly shudder, ending my dance.
The door of that shack softly creaked as it opened,
Would I die a tresspasser, or find life as I'd been hoping?
That day from hell came full circle, you see...
As a lantern bathed the lined face of that geezer for me!!
