They Call Him Diablo
Part #6
Sierra could not believe what she had read on the birth certificate. The name read Maria Lopez. She lifted her eyes to look at Diablo who was sitting in a state of shock. She said, “Diablo, Lopez is your last name, is there a connection?” Diablo softly answered, “I thought she was dead; I really thought she was dead.” “Who was dead, who are you talking about?” Sierra asked. He looked at her sadly and said, “She was my sister.” “What happened; how did you get separated, and why didn’t she let you know she was alive?” The questions kept coming from Sierra, and Diablo finally said, “Let me tell you the story, and maybe you will understand.”

Years ago when we were children; I was six and Maria was about ten, a group of men broke into our ranch that was located about fifty miles from here. They were not content to just break in and steal from us, they came to maim and kill. They shot both my parents and were assaulting Maria. She was screaming and crying, and ran out of the house. One of the men followed her and shot her. Through the open door I saw her fall to the ground. The other men forgot about me, and went out to check on what had happened. I was terrified, and started running out the back way. I ran and ran until I could run no more. I thought my whole family was gone, and I had no one left but myself. I was half out of my mind, and wandering around the countryside. One day a couple, driving a medicine wagon, stopped by a tree where I was resting. They took one look at me, and saw I was in trouble. I was filthy from head to toe, and starving for something to eat. They tried to question me about where I was from, but I was too scared to tell them anything. They gave me some food, and told me I could go with them if I wanted. So, that is what I did.

I spent quite a number of years with them traveling all over the country looking for herbs, and making tonics to sell. They kept me busy helping out, but they also kept me fed, and taught me to read and write. They were good to me in their own way. After they died, I sort of went my own way. I don’t trust people easily; but you already know that about me Sierra. I never dreamed Maria had survived that whole ordeal.

She obviously knew you were alive; I wonder why she didn’t contact you, and let you know about herself. “I don’t have the answer for that, “ Diablo answered. It’s as much a mystery to me as it is to you. We will probably learn more from all these papers that are here on the table.

Sierra stood up and walked to the stove to get more coffee. She returned with the pot, and poured another cup for Diablo. Her heart went out to him for she knew he was grieving because of the news he had received. She put the pot down, and came over and put her arms around him, and held him close. There was a mystery to be solved, but now there was a greater need, and she would see that need was met.
