They Call Him Diablo
Part #7

Sierra had suggested they put everything away for the day. She could see how difficult this was for Diablo. It was like losing your sister all over again. They picked up the papers, wedding ring, key, and locket, then put everything back in the envelope. The next morning Diablo and Sierra once again attacked the contents of the manilla envelope. There was a long sealed envelope with a woman’s handwriting on the outside with the following words, “For Diablo upon my death.” He slowly tore it open, and began to read the handwritten sheets. He read for a time, and Sierra could see there were tears in his eyes. This time she would be patient, and wait for him to tell her what the letter said.

After a while, he looked up at her and said, “Sierra, I only wish I had known Maria was kidnapped by those men on the night of the raid. They took her back to their hide-out.” She writes in this letter, “Those men were brutes, and told me they would kill me if I ever entertained thoughts of trying to escape.” She stayed with them fifteen years because she was afraid for her life. When she was twenty-five, a young man with the gang, and not cut out to be an outlaw, helped her to escape. His name was Tom Gilhard. No one knew they had married, and changed their names. Not long after they were married, Tom died with rheumatic fever. Maria’s name had been changed to Molly McGuire, and she did everything she could to change her appearance. She worked hard at cultivating the appearance of a lady. The rest was just plain hard work.

Maria found out shortly after Tom died that she was pregnant. Since no one knew she was married, she left the area and delivered the baby where she would not be known. She placed the baby girl with a group of nuns in Denver, and then returned to this area to begin life on her own. With lots of hard work, she made their small place into a profitable operation. She began to invest in cattle and a few horses. With some luck, the herd began to enlarge. Whenever she could, she sent some money to the nuns for her daughter’s expenses. The girl had been named Tia. When Tia was eight years old there was a horrible fire where the nuns and Tia resided.

It was six months before Maria heard about the fire. She went to Denver to see what she could learn, but no one knew anything about what had happened to Tia. It was believed that all the people living there were killed in the fire. Somehow she never believed Tia was gone. Maria wrote in the letter that she wanted Diablo to promise to look for and find her daughter. Inside the locket was a picture of Maria and Tia. The picture had been taken when Maria went to Denver to visit her for her sixth birthday.

There was also the key that was mentioned in the letter. “Diablo, this key is to a lock box in the bank. You will find money to be used for Tia if you find her. She will need money for education, The ranch is for both you and Tia if she is still alive. Also, you will find the names of the men who killed our parents. The rest is up to you.”
