Have you noticed what's in the news?
Air disasters, arson, people who hate other's views.
It all keeps mounting and is ready to explode.
What will happen then? Only the Good Lord knows.

Wildfires have returned Hell upon Earth,
stem cell development, is there life before birth?
Interest rates go down, but banks charge more for lending.
All get a tax refund, despite governmental spending.

North Dakota wants to change its name.
It seems as though "north" brings them much same.
Change it to Dakota, so people won't think they're cold
I guess they believe that the map can change what it's told.

An I. U. student, missing since last May
Will be on America's Most Wanted, to find life or grave.
She disappeared while taking her usual bike ride.
Her bike was found one month later, perp still hides.

Sharks and sharks swarm in the shallow waters
chomping on surfboards and unsuspecting visitors.
What's causing this outbreak of man vs. beast?
Have we tread too much of their ground, now we're the feast?

A popular singer, in late August, passed away
after her plane went down from a sky where stars never fade.
Does this always happen to young, famous folk?
It seems cruel by nature, fame's an immortal joke.

Oh, the news keeps spinning and spinning in my mind.
What happened to the simple times we've forced behind?
What's wrong with our minds that this stuff stays and burns?
I'll keep on watching, hoping, something good will, this way, turn.

Nay, two weeks after this poem was thought and born
Something awful befell this world sick and scorned.
(An evil so terrible and vile and wicked
That it would nauseate the souls of the sick and twisted.)

Two great buildings I had thought immortal
Toppled and fell into the Earth’s gaping portal.
Three passenger jets taken from their heavenly perch
Only to sear and to frighten those poor souls on Earth.

The World Trade Centers, the Pentagon…a field
All became victims of dark hearts that will never yield.
2001, a year of hurt and so many tears indeed
is mourning its own passage into history’s creed.

Suddenly, the wildfires and even Timothy McVeigh
Didn’t seem so terrible in this aftermath’s wake.
The country’s debt and those sharks tormenting those
Were suddenly forgotten with dust-covered clothes.

Monstrosities brought out the best in humanity
As we gave our blood, our money, our sympathy.
Some seared their hands on the, still melting beams,
Of a mighty civilization brought down to its knees.

School children silenced so long in their chairs
Were finally allowed to recite a little prayer.
Road rage ceased as the shock settled in.
America vowed vengeance, though did not call it “revenge.”

Gas prices, in my town, dropped to 96 cents a gallon
As though sliced in two by the eagle's mighty talon.
American missiles found their way to Afghanistan
As we hunted and sought a shell of a man.

The 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor’s shore
Seemed fresh in the minds of those born well after the war.
The wickedness that this year had planned for our hearts
Showed us the humanity that we had passed off as a lost art.

Though we move on, we must never forget
The feel of the funeral march through grass so wet.
Ignorance will kill us and hate will deliver us to Hell.
Look forward to the future, but look at the past as well.
