Diese Zwischenschicht hat die russische Bohrung bereits durchstoßen und hier Hinweise auf thermophile Organismen gefunden. Sollte sich das bewahrheiten, würde es auf hydrothermale Quellen am Boden des Sees hindeuten. In diesem Fall könnten in dem Wasser sogar Mehrzeller leben, schwärmt John Priscu, beispielsweise Röhrenwürmer oder Krebse.
