Hi Norma

I'm in Adelaide and for about 8 years I have been doing free research for anyone who wants information about their ancestors who came here in the 1800's. I saw your request re Calton name and had a look for something when I was in the Mortlock Library yesterday. It's not very much, but here's what I found"-

MARRIAGE

John Frederick Calton aged 20yrs, single, father's name not recorded married 5/1/54 to Elizabeth Goldsmith aged 20yrs, single, father's name not recorded at Trinity Church, Adelaide Dis. Adelaide ref. book21 page 4

CHILDREN BORN TO JOHN AND ELIZABETH.

1. Charles John 20/4/61 Brighton Dis. Adelaide ref. book20 page 87

2. Charlotte Mary 1/1/59 Alberton Dis. Adelaide ref book 15 page 2

3. Frederick Thomas 10/2/56 Port Adelaide, District Adelaide. Father's name recorded as JOHN FREDERICK, not FREDERICK JOHN.

Calton is an almost unheard of name here in S.Aus. The only Calton's I could find arriving in South Australia were:-

Sarah Calton and a T. Calton (Christian name not recorded) both arrived in South Australia 16/9/48 aboard the "Royal George".

Thomas Calton arrived 4/10/49 aboard the "Orator".

A John Calton arrived here in 1850. Somebody else was using the relevant arrival records when I was looking for Calton information.

The information re arrivals comes from our "Newspaper Index". In the early days, there were three daily newspapers in Adelaide. Each day a reporter from each newspaper business was sent to Port Adelaide (the port where ships arrived) and was to take a name of all the passengers on board. The reporter would then take the names back to their office and the information would be printed in the daily paper a day or so later. The reason for this was that relatives/family etc. who had already come to South Australia could look up the daily newspaper and see if their relatives/friends etc. whom they were expecting to arrive in S.Aus. had come.

I will be back in the library in a week or two, and have made a notation to find the details of the ship on which John Calton came in 1850.

I would also be happy to find marriages, children and deaths of the Calton family if you would like it.

Regards
Heather.
