Hi.. I also agree with you. Basically because mainstream religion teaches you to look into a book of other people's words, it takes people away from their own 'inner' identity and connectedness, because it's thinking in straight lines.. thinking in circles as seen in nature is the way we have been taught to stay connected and know what is going on inside us. I am Romani Gypsy, and we too have Have Holy men/women who are very honoured and reverred. It is apparently a very similar way to American Indian way. We call our Shamans Chovihano/i (Male & Female) and a Medicine doctor is a Drabengro (doctor or man of poisen), a Patrinyengri is a female Romani herbalist (Patrinyengro = male). Puvus or Puv is the spirit of the Earth, Ravnos is the Sky Spirit, Ana is the female Spirit of the Mountains, Bengesko is the Spirits of the Underworld. We also believe in the power of dreams and visions, and that 'everything' which the Creator has made has a spirit, is alive and can speak to you, teach you, guide you, enlighten you, and help in many ways.

We are also a persecuted people and have suffered in many many ways wherever we have travelled to, we have also lost many of our ancient ways, and even or language is in danger of dying because we have in the past been forbidden to speak in our own Romani Jib (Romani tongue). I feel it is vitally important to keep the old ways alive, and language is part of that connectedness to the Pureno folki (Ancestors). I believe that there will come a time when ALL people will NEED to know the old ways in order to survive.
Kushti bok! (Good Luck)
Risha
