Perhaps I am like many mixed-blood Native Americans ... of all the ethnic ingredients that make up my personal genetic cocktail, it is the Cherokee (grandma from Pike County, KY) that I always felt most close to. However, my father vehemently prohibited me from pursuing any information about my Cherokee heritage when I was young. When I tried again as an adult several years ago, I was met with the same kind of sentiment as was expressed in "Plastic Shamans ...". I have wondered, what does one do when she clearly does not belong in the white world, yet isn't welcome in the Native American world? The bottom line for me is that my blood may be mixed but my heart and my spirit are 100 percent Cherokee. It isn't something I have chosen. I am drawn here. I think I'll keep reading and learning and nurturing that because that is what I am being summoned to do.
