There are a lot of very good people out there who really know what they are doing and then there are people who THINK they know what they are doing.
If you are new, the best thing to do is ask around. You don't necessarily want to ask people who's children compete with yours because they might not always steer you in the right direction. You also don't want to ask Moms of babies unless they have an older child who also competes. They are still learning also and won't necessarily know what they are doing either.
Just because a person does good work doesn't mean they are the best for you. You might need to talk to several people and see what they have to offer before you decide on one. When you are comparing, you need to compare the exact same thing with each one. Don't go to one photographer and decide you don't want to use them because the sitting fee is so high, then go with someone else who you end up spending more with because they itemize every touch up. Find out what your final total would be for each one you price. Include traveling expenses in your figure.
If you are checking out designers. Show them all examples of what you want and ask for a quote.....in writing. Find out when they can deliver. If you need something sooner then you will either have to find someone else, or if that person is definitely who you want, then you might either have to rent something or skip that pageant. Don't assume just because you have given a vendor a date you need something that they will have it done. You aren't the only customer of theirs.
When you scout coaches, talk to thier clients. Find out what they could do before they started with that coach and what they have learned since then. Price should not be a factor when choosing your coach. You should choose who clicks with your child and can offer them what you need. If you find the one for you and can't afford lessons once a month, ask if you cant tape your lesson and then come every other month. There are a lot of people who call themselves a coach, but don't know anything about coaching. Just because they won a few titles, doesn't necessarily make them a coach.
The same thing goes with hair and make up....when you find someone who works the best for you, stick with them and don't worry about the price. The most expensive person isn't always going to be the best for you.
Try not to let your favorite vendor do it all for you. You might feel loyal, but just because someone is a good coach, doesn't mean they can do hair and make up for you and design your clothes. Just because you love your hair and make up person doesn't mean they can do other services for you as well as they do that. Too many people try to get a hand in everything and they are not necessarily all that great at the other things.
