First you have crystal and AB. Crystal are clear stones and AB have a coating on them to make them irridescent. People/designers will tell you AB stones cost more. They do, but only a couple of dollars per gross more which is not a big deal. Stones come in pointed backs which are shaped like a diamond and sparkle much more from the stage, and flat backs. Flat backed stones are cheaper. Then stones range in sizes from very tiny to huge. The average size is 20ss. The bigger the stone the more expensive they are. You also have fancy shaped stones in various shapes and sizes like marquise, pear shapes, square, and fancy round stones. The fancy cut stones are beautiful and more expensive.
You will see posts talking about brooches. These are large stones arranged to form what looks like a brooch on the outfit. They are really big right now.
You can also purchase most average sized stones in most colors to match your outfit. Colored stones run more than crystal or AB and are hard to find in the bigger stones.
Swarovski is the most popular and the prettiest stone. They are Austrian crystals and not cut glass. There are lesser expensive stones such as Czech and German stones, but they are really not as pretty as the Austrian stones and don't show as much on stage.
Currently pearls are out so if you see something adorned with pearls, it is out of style. Most designers will use a combination of crystal and AB stones on an outfit but you can use all of one or the other also. Crystal tends to sparkle more compared to AB. Also, AB stones on white tend to make the item look yellowish. Brooches, big chunky stones, and colored stones are all in.
When in doubt ask a coach or a seasoned pageant Mom for an opinion on a potential consignment purchase.
