Subject: Your thoughts?

The other day someone mentioned they had a viewing/funeral to attend. Somehow the conversation turned to whether or not to view the body of the deceased. I personally choose NOT to view the body when I attend these services. My reasons are that it is just their BODY. They are no longer "in" it. Especially in cases where someone passed in a tragic way where their appearance is altered I feel like....it's not them. That's not the final picture I want to have of someone. I don't care how good of a mortician has worked on them they will NEVER appear as beautiful as they were in my memories. I have a very vivid memory. To view someone who has passed would leave a deep impression. I choose to remember them in life.

Unfortunately this person I was speaking with felt I was being disrespectful. Especially when she learned I did not view my father's body. But again, we were warned by the funeral director that because of the accident and the condition he was in that they had done all they could but it would not be pleasant. He had a closed casket but the immediate family arrived early to view before it was closed. I chose not to view.

So, when you attend visitations or funerals what are your thoughts on viewing the body? Just curious.

**Sorry for the downer of a post** Just sparking a conversation.
