I would agree with your teacher. I've never tried rutherford soft shoes (only their hardshoes, and they're great!) but I LOVE my Antonio Pacelli Gazelle soft shoes.

It depends on the school/dancer. My teacher would teach you hard shoe when you have learned all of your soft shoe dances and have them down. By that time your rhythm should be fairly well developed, and good for hard shoe dancing.

It depends on the dress and the school. School dresses can cost from 50-500 dollars, which is what you would be looking into now. Solo dresses can cost even more, depending on the dress. But don't let the prices scare you...if you can't afford it, your school will probably have school dresses for sale.
