Subject: Artistic Freedom
This is a very sad day for me. I have had to quit my band in order to pursue music I feel very strongly about. I've posted here before that I sing in a country/bluegrass/gospel group, but that we try a lot of different styles. I had wanted to introduce a lot of BC/TGW and was beginning to do that with Timeless Love and really wanted to do Share the Land next. My guitar player balked, the rest of the group stayed in neutral. It came to direct statements of the guitar player's wishes to go toward bluegrass as a mainstay and away from the show band (hint -- my style of music). So after surprisingly little soul searching as I would expect from being in a group 15+ years, I am bowing out after our summer gigs are complete. Music as we all know is a very personal choice, and you all get it (my Burtonmania), so you understand I can't go on with a group that won't let me express myself. I know how Burton felt about introducing "I'm Scared" to The Guess Who and being laughed at.
American Woman, now you know how much your gesture below has meant to me today. Are you psychic?

I quit my band about 5 years ago, pretty much over similar differences. I wanted to be in a rock and roll band, they decided they wanted to go with a 60s band largely based on Beach Boys. I told them the Beach Boys were fine in the 60s, but now they were, in my mind, like the "fat" Elvis. A self-parody, if you would. Oh well, to make a long story short, about a year later they came crawling back to me, kicked one guy out, another quit and now we do maybe 3 Beach Boys tunes total, that's all, and a healthy dose of GW/BC. Maybe you'll end up better off than you were. Here's hoping...

I just need to come sing with your band - I would love even an unhealthy dose of GW/BC. Where are you located :-)

Well then, if I go that far, might as well move to Winnepeg.

I'm in Canada, near Calgary, Alberta. Pretty much the other side of the continent from you, I think.

Yes, it would appear so - I'm in southern Pennsylvania near Gettysburg. Who knows, though, maybe at some future get-together of the fan club we can meet and share a chorus or two.
