  Just a note of thanks.Thanks for all the great records and live performances over the years. Thanks for joining us on this board and sharing with us. My hope is that you guys have a great experience reuniting the band and that things go well enough that it turns into an American tour also. I am travelling over 500 miles to see the show, and I know that I am not alone in that respect. Thanks for sharing the "Fans" cd with us and for being so great when I was fortunate enough to meet you years ago. The meeting was memorable, as was the great performance we saw in Windsor. I am looking forward to seeing the magic again. Rock On Burton!

  Hello Mr C. and Fans
  Is there anybody out there who can tell me why a fairly successful 41 year old(and, I might add, completely heterosexual) man swoons like a teenaged girl at the thought of actually conversing with my hero of the last 25 years. Please do not get me wrong, I say this with all the respect in the world for Burton and the other fans. I love the music, and I love the book excerpts. I thoroughly enjoy everyone's commentary, but that is just the point; I am quite intrigued with my almost irrational reverence for this man. I've never had the pleasure of meeting him in person or even see him perform (yet). (I did get tickets for the shows in Calgary and Edmonton, I'm going to plan the family vacation around it this year). Please Flame away if you think this worthy, but I really would like some one to tell me what drives this emotion in me. It is a little disconcerting. I also have a certain appreciation for Shania Twain on a much smaller level, but it is not her music. Must be something else going on with that. Maybe it is some Canadian thing I got going.

  With regard to your several questions...yes, Glamour Boy was inpired by David Bowie, in particular the cover of Aladdin Sane (the cover on which he has a lightning bolt painted on his forehead). We had a poster promoting the single with our very overweight manager dressed in tights and painted the same way...it was really disgusting...
  When we first submitted the photo to RCA for distribution, we found that Bowie had copyrighted the logo on his forehead and we were forced to change the makeup on our manager for the poster...a few rare copies of this "less than charming" poster are still running around somewhere...there were also t shirts with the same disgusting picture on them...
  The red 57 chevy on Bannatyne's cover was Kurt's car at the time...he had it for a number of years, but then sold it around 1976 and bought a big Cadillac...don't know where the actual red chevy is today...
  Yes, I still have the white shoes from inside the cover, as well as the "dalmatian" patterened shirt I wore on the cover pictures...I'm a bit of a pack rat, in that I've saved or held onto almost everything of interest through the years...now that the reunion is a reality, I'm glad I did, because some of this stuff may surface in the tour program book...

  BC's excerpt about how gerry Marsden made him feel and how BC decided to never deny anyone a small piece of his time reminded me of this funny story I thought you guys would laugh at. When BC came in 96 to the Jack Singer, we went as a family. My sister that is two years younger than me and myself were lucky enough to have one of the opening acts take down an object each for BC to sign (mine was his Winnipeg Jets hockey card). Well, my other sister (my "liitle" sister, 7 yrs my junior) was all upset because she didn't get anything and had printed up a little sign for BC on our computer (said something like "BC #1 Great!-- she was only 11). So my mom managed to find one of the sound crew and tracked BC down to a nearby pub. What was so amazing was that he motioned to her to come to him from a large group of people. He asked for her name, she told him it was "Corynn", and he asked how to spell it. She did, and, seeing as how that is such an odd spelling, BC said something like "That's original". Well, me little sister, true to form even until this day, said "Yeah, I know. My parents are weird".
  No one other than Corynn from my family got to talk to BC that day, and when she did, the thing she said was that her parents were weird. What a lucky little brat.
  At any rate, I just thought it was a good example of how BC stayed true to his promise to himself, and, in effect, his admirers. It meant the world to her and she still proudly displays the _framed_ piece of paper in her room.
  Just though you all could get a good laugh out of that. I still do.

  Tales, where did you say you could sell your kids? My husband is still laughing at me. Said that one was definitely better than the time I told him on April 1 that the kids had stuffed Reese's peanut butter cups in the new VCR.

  Life is good again. Just got my tickets for Kitchener. Blue line closest to the stage Sec 15 Red 9th row up seat 5&6. The floor was not good for someone short like me.   At this point I can only hope that the tour swings south. From the treatment of other veteran groups latley I have my doubts. The Guess Who had to overcome huge adversity on both sides of the border when they started, it would be a damn shame if they face it again after all they have accomplished. Popular music is now dominated by canned rythm tracks. The monopoly of Mtv & Vh1 has the power to attract attention to who they choose. Look what a 2 day marathon did for the Monkees. Now more than ever would be the time to request replays of Don Kischners & the Midnight Special (were they on both?) besides the regular requests for Behind The Music. Just imagine what a performance on Storytellers or Hard Rock live could do to shake the cobwebs from the memories of Joe Average, let alone gain new & younger fans. Even just daily request to the local radio station. It's up to us true believers to stir up the collective awareness and get them back in the spotlight. Their performance & talent will do the rest. I could be wrong there could be a huge response from this side of the border without exposure but ask yourself what could it hurt to be persistent.

  I've recently redeveloped an interest in the music of Burton Cummings. The voice, the piano playing, the lyrics touch me deeply. What talent. I was searching online for concert dates, and stumbled across this site. I am simply amazed that a man with this amount of talent treats his fans with such reverence...to actually take the time to chat with them and share himself with them. Please add Phoenix to your list of concert venues one day. I'd love to hear you in person. And thank you for being a "regular Joe". You supply your fans with countless hours of enjoyment, and it's refreshing to see that you are appreciative of the people who "put gas in your car".

  Well, I got my tickets, and Mari Gottwald's. I should be excited (and I am) but I'm also bummed out, because, STANDING at Ticketmaster, with the Ticketmaster lady getting on the computer at 1000, when the tickets went on sale, the best we could get is Row 14 at the '5 o'clock position' (with the stage being 12!). NO ground seats available, AT all. I was so crushed. So, are super-good tickets like that all presales, or what? Is there no hope?? Are Mari and I crazy to think there's some way we might still get to meet Burton?? Well, at least I know to bring binoculars.... I'll need consolation tonight, fan club friends! - navygirl

  I'm very disappointed that the U.S. has been left off the reunion tour. I was hoping to see Burton and the rest of the group. If by some lucky star the tour drifts south, I will be first in line for tickets. Memphis, TN Pyramid is a wonderful location for a concert - HINT!

  Not real sure where to begin, except to say i've been a fan for decades (gawd, that must date me) LOL, but very glad to see you on the board BC. I wonder if you might share any memories of the old days playing "dances" in Grafton, Minto, or Grand Forks. I caught several dances, and spoke with you every time, being a typical fan. I've caught your shows both with GW and solo, in diff venues over the years. I was backstage at The Eagles Hotel California tour at the downs in Winnipeg when you joined Steve Miller onstage, doing a duet of "The Joker".....will be the first to admit i was quite influenced by maryjane, and it only made the performance more exquisite...caught many shows at the Centenniel Concert Hall, my fav there was your "Dreams of a Child" tour, where at the end of that song, during the instrumental, you stood up on your bench and did a slow swan rhytmical arm wave...i wont discuss how i deceived, connived, and blatantly cheated to get into the show after my tickets got misplaced at the door LOL...also caught you with GW at UND fieldhouse in GF, and thought Dom T.'s guitar work, although brilliant, was a bit out-of-step with the band.....hhhmmmmm, i recall you and ZZ Top in Fargo about 77 or 78 as well, excellent show!!! A personal observation if i may: Seems like when you write solo, we get mostly ballads, which is of couse fine. But seems like when you have a co-writer, we get hard-driving Rock-n-Roll which is great.....just a random thought.....Also recall a show you and Randy did at Chester Fritz in early or mid 80's, where you said an earthquake blew you out of bed that very morning, before you flew in for the show...the wife, 2 sons and i went backstage to meet and greet, but were soundly stopped by good old Marty. I dropped a name of a gal from the booking agency, hoping Marty would let us in, and he lamented, wanting to know how i knew Mary---oil well hehehe, we met again, and the wife and kids were rather awe-struck...you recalled seeing us in the front row of the show, and i was impressed you spotted that, with the lights, etc.....Also caught a GW show in Hawaii, but truthfully, i had found a lil maui-wowee, but thats another story LOL...By the way, any idea whatever happened to Larry Evoy?   I am once again humbled and encouraged by all your support...last Friday night was my introduction to this site and the chat we had was fabulous...(I must admit, I had some fun at first too, when none of the chatters knew it was me..) After some rather strange events here, I can only reassure all of you that I will continue to treat this site with respect and reverence...you all make me feel very special and I refuse to be bullied out of here...if some questionable people have a beef with me and my responses here, I'm just going to ignore them and continue to converse with you who mean so much to me...
  I'm very proud of this site and the work that has gone into it...I'm digging up some rare photos for the gallery...stuff that no one has ever seen...also working on assembling For The Fans Volume 2 this weekend in LA...I feel I must also mention how much it meant to me that you all immediately rallied around me in the wake of Thursday morning's lunacy...I think you all know by now how much you mean to me, and I trust that none of you ever thought that was me saying those horrible things...
  I'll get to as many individual responses as time will allow...flying back from Toronto to LA tomorrow morning, and if there's a friday night chat, I'll definitely be there..
  Once again, thank you all for your friendship and support...you make me feel proud and fulfilled...

  I got to the Ticketmaster at about 9:50. There were only 7 people in front of me. By the time the 4th person had gotten through, about 10:03, they announced ALL the expensive tickets were gone. No biggie, since I didn't have that kind of money anyway. So I went for the #2 seats, which was my plan all along. Here in Calgary, after taxes and Ticketmaster fees, they were $60.50 each. OUCH! Anyway, when the guy in front of me got to the wicket, they said some of the $82.50 seats had been freed up, so he grabbed 4 on the 8th row. Now I'm starting to sweat; just how many of these expensive tickets are there, and where do the cheap seats begin? Anyway, I got to the wicket, plunked down my $121.00 for two, and lo and behold, I was surprised with a HOT 12th row on the floor! For an extra 22 bucks a ticket, the guy in front of my only got 4 rows closer! Anyway, I got 'em, and I'm PUMPED!!! Now, as soon as my e-bay auction for 2 of my kids goes through, I'll be able to afford seats to Edmonton, Red Deer and Lethbridge . Nah, I'll keep my kids. But come hell or high water, I'm gonna shoot for another show. Man, I'd love to hear the crowd react when they do Runnin' Back to Saskatoon in Red Deer (Red Deer, Terrace and a Medicine Hat...). Of course, I can just imagine what it would be like in Saskatoon! Well, I'll shut up now, I'm properly wired!

  Saw a posting the other day from Ben McPeek's nephew and can't find it again...maybe have to search the archives more thoroughly...anyhow, in answer to your questions, yes Ben and I were going to do a collaboration together, but it never got to come to fruition...Ben was a great guy and helped me along with many musical approaches when I was young, intimidated and inexperienced...I have nothing but the fondest memories of Ben, and I truly believe in my heart that These Eyes and Sour Suite would NEVER have been nearly as effective as records without Ben's BRILLLIANT string arrangements. And never let any of us forget his BRILLIANT arranagement on Goin' A Little Crazy on the Bannatyne album...
  His early passing was tragic, but true to the class of the man, he never let anyone know he was sick or dying...I was shocked when he passed on and I think of him very fondly and very often...I'm pleased that you are here on the board and I hope we can converse a little more on a one on one basis concerning Ben...he made me better, and for that I shall remain eternally grateful to him and his legacy.
  Be well and stay in touch...it's great to talk to any relative or friend of Ben's...

  Burton, the excerpts help me to understand why you are so gracious to your fans, from impact of meeting Jim Morrison to the negative experience with Gerry Marsden. You can understand what it means to a fan who meets a musician who has made an emotional impact on that fan with his/hers music. Thanks for being great guy and not a prick.

  Burton has taken, and continues to take, some barbs from
  people in and out of the business. Without getting too maudlin, I would like to offer an observation about people,
  such as Burton, who are at a higher level in their profession.
  
  Over the past year, I had the opportunity/misfortune to have to deal with a number of Eye Doctors, both Optometrists and Eye Surgeons. What really struck me was
  the difference in personalities between an Optometrist and an Eye Surgeon, namely that the Surgeons initially seemed to be very "cocky"...the one guy really left me wonderin'
  what I was getting into at the first visit. But I quickly
  realized that their demeanor relates directly to where they
  fit in, at the skill level within their profession. An
  Eye Surgeon, because of his skill level, HAS to be very
  self- assured....can you imagine a surgeon doing surgery
  and questioning himself during an operation!?!? The Optometrists I dealt with were more laid- back or low- key in their demeanor...that last comment should not be interpretted as suggesting they were not skilled or talented. While the Eye Surgeons kinda' rubbed me the wrong way at first, I sure had total confidence in them in "the
  room". In a similar vein, a musician at the top of his profession, such as BC, HAS to be self- assured because
  he has to perform at a top level all the time; that perhaps leads to some people mis-interpretting his comments/actions as "cocky" or self- centered.
  
  I hope I presented my comments clearly; I am not putting down Optometrists in the illustration, only trying to show a rather strong observation I made. Anyone else agree/ disagree?
  
  What lead me to share this observation was my reading some dopey comments on another website from some people that should know better. Some classic rock posters that had admonished another poster for criticizing a bands' performance, a few weeks ago, were amazingly critical of some of BC's remarks on this website. I believe the gist of their original remarks centered on people being entitled to like whatever music they wish, and whatever artists they liked,
  when they criticized the poster a few weeks ago. Somehow, it is suddenly OK to dismiss BC the artist as self-centered; if these "critics" ever wanted to have a hit record, they'd have to go to a record store and buy one.

  If you read this I just want to let you know that I've been a huge fan, like so many others from the Fan Club B.B. for years now! I've enjoyed listening to GW/BC music for 30+ years and never seem to get enough. Don't get me wrong, I listen to a lot of other music too, But no other artist could stand up to my expectations like Burton Cummings and The Guess Who. Myself, Like many other's I'm sure, Will always be greatfull for the Songs, The Memories, The Music from the past& Present that you and The Guess Who has brought to us! I've never been able to put together a list of favorites because the list always ends up too long. Just when I thought I've heard the best song from Burton, Along comes another. From the early day's of The Guess Who to the BC Solo Career come's a huge collection of timeless classic's.......This I hope will shed some light on the question you ask yourself, I sometimes wonder if I'm really any good? Man, If it's any consolation, Your #1 in my Book!!!!! By the way Burton, Please tell Sam Boyd that I thank him again for trying to get me backstage to meet you at the CNE in Aug. 1999. I know you had a lot of TV people there. But more importantly, Thank Sandy even more because she got you to autograph my Up Close & Alone CD at the Brockville RiverFest in '99 which was the highlight in my life because I finally got to see you perform Live for the first time! Sandy has been a doll and I thank her for pushing to try to get my wife and I backstage at both concerts to meet you! Well, Hopefully in the near future? And one last note. Sam told me in an e-mail that you are always listening to new original music. I told him that I'll put down the couple of original's that I have on my Fostex 4-track recorder and send them to an address he provided. Been a little busy lately but hope to have them done soon. They may not be the greatest but their mine! Any way I would value your opion ( Good or Bad ) on the song's. Until Next Time.

  iHawk- Man I gotta echo your view on the Brian Wilson disc. I think it's great that he is so highly regarded today and that so many writers out there revere him, but I think the down side of it is that so many Brian fans are grinding their own axes, wishing he'd finish Smile or what have you, in other words, I find there to be alot of negativity and disrespect among his fans for the commercial nature of "Imagination." I've read so many pissy reviews of it and heard so many pale little artpukes desparaging its "Mike Love-like" aspects; my question to them is : Are you even listening? Jeez, LISTEN to the vocals on this thing! I'm just glad the guy's still alive, thrilled that he seems happy and healthy again, but none of us had the right to expect a gift like "Imagination" at this late date. Thank you God! This summer I can go see The Guess Who live in the land where they are kings and I can also go see Brian Wilson happily performing in the land where he is king. What riches!!!
  Now, one for you and everyone else who is curious:

  It's funny - I grew up in Winnipeg, (went to a school on Bannatyne, even) was born in '69 and in a way the Guess Who and Burton Cummings were part of the fabric of growing up there, without me being that aware of them. I wasn't always a wild fan.
  
  I always heard and liked American Woman, and a couple of what I think of as Burton's AM gold standards - Timeless Love and Rhapsody. I had a couple of funny "brushes with Burton" - when I was about 10 I went to 7-11 on Academy Road with my Aunt, Evelyn Anderson, and she bought me a slurpee - the guy ahead of me in line was Burton, I didn't know who he was, but she is an actress and had been in one of his specials shot in Winnipeg. He knew who she was, which was funny.
  
  When I was about 21, I was a delivery driver for Dickie Dee Ice Cream (not a bike rider, I drove a truck). The people who owned Dickie Dee knew Burton, and at annual company party I played their Yahama Digitial Player Piano. They told me Burton had played it as well and (though they told me he had asked them not to do it much) they slapped in a disk of Burton playing. I sat there and watched the keys pound out R&B. Weird feeling.
  
  Those events are really important to me now. About five years ago I bought a 73 International Harvester pick-up to run a business. Turns out it had a working 8-track player, so I picked up a bunch of 8-tracks (99 cents for three at Valu Village) Of course I picked up The Greatest of the Guess Who. I would tool around the 'peg with long hair and a beard, smoking like a chimney and belting out "Glamour Boy" as best I could.
  
  That's when Burton and the Guess Who got their hooks into me, and dammit, it's been like an addiction ever since. Oh it started innocent enough. "Why don't I pick up Burton Cummings' Greatest Hits. I've always liked Timeless Love." But then I'd find another song that was great. And another. And another. So I end up buying every CD I can. I lost the Burton Cummings Collection, and bought two copies of it. Gave another to a friend. Started picking up LP's and putting them up on my office wall - as I type, I'm looking at My Own Way to Rock (picked up the re-mastered CD - and does it sound sweet) Burton's debut, Road food, The Greatest Hits and Rockin'. For months Burton was on the desktop of my computer - in the groovy rainbow sweater from Greatest Hits or vacuuming his basment from the Collection).
  
  I listened to these songs, and they came to mean so much. Guns, Guns, Guns has become one of my favourite songs of all time - so poignant, so brutal. A couple of summer ago my dad had cancer - he was dying - and that line, "Never really wanted to say goodbye" - has haunted me, comforted me, been such a solace - I can barely express it. I listened to it over and over, crying, sobbing.
  
  When I went to see Burton at the CNE, it was the same thing. Timeless Love, God, I wept it was so beautiful - so Winnipeg, it was like going home. I couldn't believe it when I picked up the Collection and found out that he wrote songs like Stand Tall in Roade Studios - my mom's house is two streets over. I went back to Winnipeg at Christmas and found the place was for rent, I almost dropped the cash to pick it up. Turns out a couple of friends of mine had lived in there, including one who has done some work with Burton as a promoter (Billy C).
  
  I saw Burton at the CNE with my wife and sister-in-law Missy, and I think I've got a new convert. Missy picked up "up close and alone" It's got her hooks into her. We've all got tickets to the show in June. I'm thinking of flying back to Winnipeg for the show at CanWest Global park.
  
  Anyway, I know I've gone on too long. I doubt anyone cares, but I just wanted to thank Burton and the Guess Who for giving us so much memorable music, for really accomplishing what the best of art can do - move someone, provide comfort, delight, laughter, tears - and sometimes make them think.

  It’s difficult to say exactly when the fascination with music, particularly records, signed a permanent lease in my psyche. I know for certain that it was well before 1953, the year I started kindergarten at Luxton School. My mother collected seventy-eights and I was always fascinated with our old wind-up phonograph machine. She had records by Bing Crosby, Eddie Fisher, Dinah Shore, Guy Mitchell, Perry Como, The Mills Brothers, and Frankie Carle and his Honky Ton Piano. I know there were many others because she had lots of records, but these few artists spring to mind immediately without much recounting effort. My mother also played the piano, having had some lessons when her parents could afford it.
  There was always music in the house. My mother would sometimes sing with my Aunt Molly and my Aunt Pat...usually “Whispering Hope” or perhaps some Christmas song...their three part harmony wasn’t half bad, and to a little kid listening around the piano right there in the dining room, it was pretty damned impressive. Molly, Pat, and my mom could all play the piano and sing...apparently so could my dad, although the one time I saw him near a piano, you would never have known it.
  Suffice to say, both my parents had music in them. Melodies and structures always seemed to dance through my head very naturally and unmysteriously. Even my grandmother would occasionally stroll over to the old piano and pick out some simple melody. She was almost shy about it, yet she didn’t seem to mind having a little kid watch her. Yessirree, I grew up in a house full of music.
  I was born on the last day of 1947 and the first records I actually OWNED and could call MY OWN were seventy-eights...simple mathematics lets one know that I was collecting records by the time I was eight years old. My mother bought me a 78 of Hound Dog/Don’t Be Cruel by Elvis. That record peaked in August of 1956. There you have it...by the summer months of 1956 I was already enthralled by this new energy they were calling Rock and Roll. I remember seeing Elvis on Ed Sullivan just afer we had first gotten a TV set...I was about seven or eight years old, but he GOT ME...I wanted to be just like him...one night my uncle George was over at the house and he had some blue suede shoes...he had taken them off while visiting...I remember grabbing a broom, holding it like a guitar, stepping into this huge pair of adult’s shoes and launching into “Well it’s one fo the money, two fo the show...” my mom, Uncle George and Auntie Pat thought it was hilarious...probably some of my earliest applause...
  March of 1959...Brook Benton had just scored BIG BIG BIG with “It’s Just a Matter of Time” and he was going to be on Ed Sulllivan the coming Sunday night. I sat glued and enthralled through the whole show of jugglers, ventriloquists, comedians, dancers, and lame Broadway numbers ( a genre, by the way, whose validity or reason ENTIRELY ELUDES ME TO THIS VERY, MIDDLE-AGED DAY ). About fifty-seven and a half minutes into the hour, Ed brought Brook out and he managed to squeeze in most of his recent Number Three smash...1959...I guess any black singer was pretty lucky to be on network television at all in 1959...
  Many folks tend to think Elvis “started the whole thing”...I think not...Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was probaably far more outrageous than Elvis would ever be...so was Litle Richard. One has to remember how America was in the fifties...WW2 and Korea were over and gasoline was about twenty cents a gallon. Advertising still said that smoking was “delicious” and “fashionable”. Kids and their parens would ALL listen to Dinah Shore and Bing Crosby...TOGETHER!
  Into the midst of this Ozzie and Harriet adventure of a country bursts this “devil music”, tailored strictly for teenagers. The world had begun to change more quickly and irreversibly than ever before in history.

  August 31, 1975, I had been a dedicated Guess who fan for 5 years and tonight I was going to see them live in concert for the first time at CNE stadium in Toronto. Only problem was it was raining. Not a light drizzle or even a sprinkle. It was POURING! There I was soaked to the skin. The show was late getting started, we had just sat through a truncated set by the openning act of shawne Jackson and the stage was getting pummelled by the wind and the rain. Just when I was about to despair, out of the darkness from the stage, I heard a familiar voice on the microphone scream "To Hell With The Rain, We're going to rock tonight, Toronto!!!" Up come the lights and Burton and the boys are belting out Down And Out Women. Stage hands were coming out constantly wiping water off instruments and amplifiers. The keyboards were covered in plastic. The band had every right to call the whole thing off. But Burton, ever the professional wasn't going to leave us unrewarded for waiting in the wet. We got the full show that night. 2+ hours of great rock and roll from Burton, Domenic, Bill and Garry. It was a night that I will never ever forget. Got a bootleg of the show about a year ago that I just love. Also the first date with a girl who would later become my wife. Although we celebrate our wedding anniversary every year, we always do something special every August 31. this year, it will be 25 years... Man, I'm a sentimental fool... Burton, I'm really enjoying the book exerpts. Thanks for hanging in for the fans, both this morning and 25 years ago in a rainstorm...

  For those of us waiting for PRIME seats for the Winnipeg show you can forget about it.
  
  I talked to TICKETBASTARD this morning and they say if you were a Season ticket holder for the Goldeyes you had first crack.This is Sam Katz's park so they get first crack.
  This of course translates into maybe not a lot of seats sold but most defitnitely the best ones.
  
  As a GW fan and an avid Goldeye fan not to mention a huge backer of the new Stadium I am apalled that I won't have first crack at the seats like everyone else.
  Here Sam B., is another one of those reasons I mention about fans and elitism and catering to the wrong group.
  The New Year's Gig was the same thing.I'm sure over 50 % of those people were/just avid gamblers and didn't really care about the quality entertainment put up on stage.
  
  Now someone might mention thaty well we get perks here(Online ) too but there is a difference we are avid fans and not just fair weather fans.We're in it for the long haul not just the Reunion.
  Well I probably kissed any luck of getting seats for the secret venue but I had to speak.
  
  I have just lost a lot of respect for Sam Katz after being in his corner all these years.
  
  I am a little perturbed that I won't have a good seat OUTDOORS on the Prairies on a Hot Summer's Night.There is no other place I'd rather be.You have to experience TGW outodoors on the Prairies to fully appreciate their music.

  A FAN CLUB NAME. We really should offer up some suggestions again or have luxton name us himself. And maybe this is totally hokey, but once done, I plan to get a t-shirt made with the BC Fan Club name and my handle put on it and wear it with extreme pride when I go to the reunion concert, or any other BC concert for that matter.

  It’s a little blurry exactly when I first knew I wanted to be in a band, or had the ability even to consider it, but one certain incident may have cemented my ultimate fate. Grade Eight...Luxton School...music class with Miss Milgrom. Edd Smith and I were just about best friends, hanging out together almost constantly. He already had a cheap electric guitar and amp. We had auditioned for the Amateur Show, a local Winnipeg television deal, dreaming of winning and being asked back to perform again the following week. Our audition had deemed that we spend a certain amount of time in preparation. During those early “rehearsals” we worked up duet versions of several numbers. Edd and I, having learned these several numbers anyway, privately approached Miss Milgrom one day and asked her if we could perform something in front of the whole room during our next music class. We ended up performing “This Time” by Troy Shondell and “What’d I Say” by Ray Charles. I played piano and sang, and Edd sort of “played along” on electric guitar. Members of the whole class, particularly the girls, were seemingly very impressed...the die was cast for me right there that afternoon in
  Grade Eight at Luxton School. I knew what I WANTED to do, yet actually accomplishing any of it was several years away at this point.
  Edd was constantly turning me on to “ things rock and roll” that I otherwise might have missed. I must give Edd Smith a HUGE amount of credit and gratitude concerning what he did for me during the most malleable period of my adolescence. I might never have heard “Silver City” by the Ventures were it not for Edd. I might never have been interested engough to send money orders to England for Shadows albums on vinyl during ‘62,’63, and ‘64 were it not for Edd. Once in Grade Nine (our last year at Luxton) his knowledge of and enthusiasm for the rock and roll world hit me square in the face.
  Shortly after Winnipeg had first gotten Channel Twelve from Pembina, North
  Dakota, Edd and our mutual friend Tom Laszlo started talking about the coming D-Day...I had no idea what they meant, nor that they were referring to “DEE” Day...
  they were talking about the imminent appearance of Joey Dee and the Starliters on American Bandstand to lip sync something on Channel Twelve at four thirty on a Friday afternoon. All week long at school, I looked forward to that few minutes of black and white television history. Since the single of Peppermint Twist peaked on the Billboarad chart in January of 1962, this “magic week” of anticipation leading up to DEE day must have occured during the winter of 1961/1962. Edd Smith nurtured the seeds that radio had already planted in the head of a North End kid several years eariler.
  Edd and I made another Amateur Show appearance several months after the first one. This time we had a drummer with us, a school friend named Francis Kostiuk. He had a great set of drums and somehow we ended up on television, just the three of us, doing Dion Di Mucci’s “The Wanderer”. As memory serves me, we rocked pretty well this time. I was still delivering the Winnipeg Tribune six days a week at this point, and I remember some of the younger girls who lived with their parents on my paper route commenting and giggling about my singing. I was about twelve or thirteen at this time, and very shy of girls. I found out quickly what power lurked there in the ability to get up and sing a few tunes, even stuff you hadn’t written yourself. The Beatles hadn’t happened yet, but I was already sold hook, line and sinker on the idea of being a pop singer for a living.
  I admired Edd, always thought he was cool. He knew about stuff I didn’t. He knew all about the Shadows and Hank Marvin. He knew that Brian “Licorice” Locking was their new bass player in the movie and on the album of Summer Holiday. He turned me on to my all time favourite Shadows instrumental, “Round and Round”. The only places this cut appears are on the Summer Holiday soundtrack and in the eight disc box set from EMI Europe mentioned earlier. Edd had a tape recorder. Edd had a Silvertone electric guitar and some kind of compatible amp. Edd was the one who showed me how to hook a Di Armond violin pickup directly to the soundboard in the back of an upright piano so I could play any of the Community Club uprights through Derek’s Fender amp. I spent countless hours at his house on Cathedral near Scotia, several times seeing things on his family’s television set that are indelibly stamped into my memory. You see, the Smiths were receiving Channel Twelve and at my house we were not. Channel Twelve brought American Bandstand into Winnipeg and it was the only station broadcasting it. Many, many days right after four we’d rush to Edd’s house and tune in Bandstand at 4:30. I saw many soulful black singers on American Bandstand at Edd’s place...even though they were merely lyp syncing their hits, it gave me a chance to associate some of these other worldly voices with the faces that harboured them. The lead singer of one of the hot black girl groups of the day (perhaps the Chiffons, perhaps the Marvelettes) told Dick Clark that Ray Charles had been a huge influence on her. Forever after that I paid more attention to Ray Charles. I was motivated to get some of his LP’s, most notably the What’d I Say album on Atlantic. I still love that picture on the cover where you see this beautiful old AK 47 reflected in Brother Ray’s glasses. I really got into that whole album as a fairly young kid. What a great crash course it is for soul and blues.
  I still regularly play Rockhouse, Roll With My Baby, That’s Enough, which I later recorded myself with one of the Raelets singing on it, My Bonnie, and the long version of What’d I Say. The title cut is truly a masterpiece. When it all breaks down between Part One and Part Two and the girls start answering Ray with just drums and handclaps going behind them, it’s truly invigorating... Hallmark moment.
  So indirectly, even my affinity toward Ray Charles is traceable back to Edd Smith. When I left the Deverons to join the GW, the guy I really missed most was Edd, because I had known him far earlier in life than I’d known the other three.
  Edd, I thank you again.
  Cut to January or February of 1965, Winnipeg Arena. Gerry and the Pacemakers appeared there during the height of the British Invasion. We Deverons somehow lucked out and got to be the number one act on the show that night. We were first, then came the Guess Who (Bachman, Peterson, Kale, Ashley & Allen), then G & T P. There were one inch thick guard ropes around the front of the stage. The pre show hype had been tremendous. The crowd was at a fever pitch and although we went on a good hour and a quarter before the headliners, things were still pretty electric for us. We did our show, then the GW came on. As usual they were bloody great. Can’t remember what numbers they did that night, but they were at the top of their game at this point. I hung around outside the Pacemakers’ dressing room door for quite a while, waiting for them to appear and perform. Finally, shortly before they were to go on, Gerry Marsden came out of the dressing room. I had a large piece of white cardboard, which I think had his bootprint on it for some reason. I was star struck seeing him in person...I had sung several of his songs on stage innumerable times. I held up the cardboard and asked him politely if he would sign it. He laughed, smirked at one of his other guys, and said “What...do you want me to PISS ON IT TOO...?” He kept right on walking toward the stage. Bye bye Burton. I was crushed. I told myself later that night that if I were ever in the position where someone wanted an autograph or a reasonably small amount of my time I would not refuse. I never wanted to make anyone else feel the way that Gerry Marsden had made me feel at 17 yrs. old. He may not have been so nice to me but they sure put on a hell of a show that night...trouble was, the entire crowd hardly heard a note. The screaming was all part of the British Invasion and the frenzy that the Beatles had first instigated. Gerry and the Pacemakers may have had “How Do You Do It” initially before the Beatles onslaught, but it was an isolated incident. It really was the Beatles that created that mythical “British Scene” about which we all wondered and fantasized. The competition (actually PERCEIVED competition...this “Who will beat the Beatles next?” stuff was largely invented and fueled by the media) factor was played to the hilt between the British bands, but none of this grading them against each other seemed to occur until the Beatles had first laid down their incredible yardstick, by which all subsequent groups would soon be judged. You have to go pretty far to beat something like “A Hard Day’s Night”.

By the way, there was a time way back when Peterson was signing his first name with only one R...if something that insignificant makes anyone here thiink I'm an imposter, then again this is a classic case of "OVER SCRUTINY"...I see that I'm beginning to encounter all the same problems in cyber space that I've been battling in the "other world" for so many years...is there no end to all of this? Can't we just post back and forth like civilized upright primates? Good Lord, I've only been on line about three weeks and already I'm being pushed around...some things never change...

  Hi All
  I have wanted to see Burton for years and never have done it. So this summer I am gonna see at least one show. I am living in Minneapolis so I will have little trouble getting to Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, or Brandon. I have not been to a concert of any kind for about 20 years. The last few I went to were a more than a little wild so my first question: Do you think it is OK for me to bring my 10 year old son to the show? He'd love to go. Also do you know when and where the tickets for the Thunder Bay show go on sale, I have not found them on www.ticketmaster.ca . Is the Thunder Bay show out doors??
  Which of these three events would you (folks who know better) recommend we see?

  Wow! What a week it's been for all of us.I've been thinking about what it is that has drawn me to the music of Burton and the GW and I'll leave my ideas here for debate/discussion.
  #1 THE MUSIC! The songs have held up incredibly well over the years. Listen to some of the songs by other artists that were popular in the early to mid 70's that sound pretty lame today. Share the Land is as powerful and moving today as it was almost 30 years ago. Same for Hand Me Down World, Sour Suite, and on and on!
  #2 The guys themselves. No self centered, inflated ego, "I am wonderful" prima donnas here. I met Gary last year and he couldn't have been nicer. Burton's presence here on this board confirms that he really cares about the fans. They've always been known as just a bunch of regular guys. Music is much better when you can relate to the not only the songs but the players too. How many times have you been listening to a GW or BC song and thought " Yeah...I know what he means "?

  hi everyone - just sitting back and thinking about all that's gone on today. the reason i signed onto this board was because i am a great fan of burton's music. partly because of the music and partly because (if you've read some of my posts) because my late uncle - (ben mcpeek) worked with the band. to me the two are and always will be intertwined. my uncle was basically my father as i was growing up, and it was always a bragging source for me (especially when i was 14) that in some way i had a guess who connection. that doesn't minimize the admiration i had/have for burton (AND RANDY FOR THAT MATTER) but it seems that some people just don't know when to leave a good thing alone. i enjoy this board cuz we can talk and exchange ideas and musings on b.c, and the g.w. , and what they've meant to us. i'm really excited about the upcoming reunion and equally excited that burton is here with us on line, let's not get too carried away here, and blow a really good and i think unique experience-(it's not everyday that you get to speak to your heroes on an almost everyday basis). so let's all have fun, get to know each other and mostly - please - keep the focus on the music and the magic that inspired all of us to be here in the first place -- joe

  As in real life, c space is full of bullies, cretins and stalkers...I had my first real encounter with three of them early this morning...fortunately I have a very advanced hacker/programmer friend who came to my aid when I needed him most...I refuse to be bullied out of my own fan club just because some people have it in for me...
  Thanks Deb for riding shotgun on some of the madness this morning...I shall keep posting under the name Luxton for now, although I'll probably have to alter a couple of my e mail addresses...to all of you...when these small groups of computer whiz people gang up on you, just walk away and get off line as quickly as possible...some horrible things were said here this morning and I'm glad to see that Deb is on top of things...thanks to all of you for your support...let's just get things back to where they were a couple of days ago...
  I'll post a few more varied experpts from the book over the next couple of days for those who are interested...
  tonight I'm going to see CSNY here in Toronto...probably won't sign in later...still a bit gun-shy after this morning's strange events and encounters...
  Thankfully, this matter has been strongly dealt with and once again, thanks to Deb for the help.

  When I read awhile back that Burton was writing an autobiography,I really got excited. I love to read, and I just kept thinking about what a great book it would be. Then the extraordinary events of the last week. I just finished reading the postings of Burton's from CLCH. I was fascinated! Folks, I've read a lot of books, and BC can write! I recognized a way with words from his postings. I want more! Please finish the book, Burton. I always laugh when I see that picture of you as a baby from UP CLOSE AND ALONE. Looks like a kid to whom fascinating things are going to happen and it sounds like they did! You share so much of yourself with your music. The honesty in your writing is just as obvious. To your musical gifts we now have to add literary ones. I share a lot of your musings about the nature of existence. I never drove Morrison around L.A., but I'm sure glad you did! You make it come alive. At the risk of bringing iHawk down on my head for being too "sucky", I have to say you have an exceptional and creative mind and thanks for sharing it with us in any of the ways you choose.

  Burton, first of all, thank you for 35 years of great music. I was 12 years old when my father took me to see my first GW show at the CNE Grandstand. There are only two other GW shows in Toronto that I missed. Saw the Bachman/Cummings band at the Ontario Place Forum. I was there during the afternoon sound check when you said "This band does more hits during the sound check than most bands will do in an entire concert". You were right. I have always said that you have THE best voice in rock'n'roll. I am really looking forward to The Amphitheatre show on June 15th.
  

  
  The "Fans" cd is excellent(especially the medley)- keep 'em coming. You are a music historian who obviously loves his craft. I have you on video doing Dylan's "Masters of War" from MuchMusic during the first Gulf War - incredible. I won tickets to your MuchMoreMusic night last November and it was terrific. The off-camera stuff during the commercial break showed just how "down to earth" you really are.
  

  
  The fact that you are posting here means a lot to me. Over the years, I have bought each GW album an average of two times on vinyl, plus them all (except Artificial Paradise) again on cd. Question: why has Paradise never been released on cd?

  The events of the last few days have really made my week, month, year etc.... I have been a longtime "lurker" infrequent poster to the imusic board. I could not deal with the turmoil that would develop there from you know who. I have to admit I had lost some (not all faith) That my favorite band would reform, but I did keep checking back from time to time to see what was new. Rumours are now reality and the legend himself is actually posting his thoughts and memoirs here, I feel like Chris Farley with Paul Mcartney as a guest "remember when .....? That was awesome"!   Looks like the best date for a lot of us from the Buffalo area is the Kitchener show on Saturday June 10th. Being a weekend night means no vacation needed and we can go up early on Saturday and stay late on Sunday. I know this works well for Odie, Rock, StarBaby and some others.   I know that we've discussed this before. And I know that I've initiated this discussion before. But I can't get over how good of a drummer this guy is. I was just listening to his work on that outtake of "No Sugar/New Mother" on #3 of the Ultimate Collection and the guy is amazing.
