Hey there Doc. Let me give you my 2 cents as a mage who has both of those.

Arcane.. well.. it'll help you in the beginning, but frankly I almost never, ever use it at this point. You COULD choose to wear level VI items with it but frankly with 7's around I never really do. It helped me for about 10-12 levels after I bought it and mainly that was it. The focusing stone is the only orb I really use 99% of the time because of the +6 to all schools, and it has a measly arcane requirement of 121 (easy to hit unbuffed as a mage).

This is purely a result of my play style.. I don't rely on items for almost anything, just my robs, spells, and a few armor bits like gaunts and a helmet.

Lockpick has been very handy already. I've made a lot of keys for vassals and yself from obsidian and copper hearts, and also a lot of singularity keys which I have used in trades to get some very handy stuff for me and mine. One thing to consider in that regard is that you have to be able to kill hollow minions and/or Virindi observers to get the keys, and have to have 310+ pick skill to have a good success rate for carving.

Masters and directors DO sometimes drop sing keys, but very, very rarely compared to observers and minions.

I took lore at 40 and pick at 70.

It's impossible to predict what new content they will put in.. who knows, we might get items with level 7 spells someday here at which point arcane would again be a nice thing for a mage. Currently in my opinion it isn't that useful in the long term.

I'd take pick only when you feel you are able to make use of it. :) I buff to 343 lockpick and have not raise dit since buying.. but it took me about 35,000,000xp to lift it that high and I use level 7 buffs and focusing stone to get to 343. I have failed 1 sing key out of about 30 carved now.

The only other real skill which is primary would be healing, which I have never missed. It'd be best for PK situations I think, which doesn't reall fit either of us.

So there are good and bad to all skills.. just remember what secondary things go along with each one when you choose. :)
