"attempting to be a good monarch for my folks, since I didn't exactly do a stellar job back then due to all sorts of things.. a good one being I was such a gimp with Duncan there wasn't really much help I could provide anyone. ;)" -Six Angry Mobsters, Subject: Heh heh, interesting.
A couple of points that I want to make here...
1. There is NO SUCH THING as a gimp!!!
2. Even if I can't convince you that there's no such thing as a gimp, if you believe that your character is "gimped," does that really mean that you're not a good monarch?
Personally, I believe that a person's character supercede's a toons abilities/aptitudes. But, that's just my opinion and I will harp on that until the fire auroch bulls come home :)
So, what makes a good monarch?
I wanted to talk about my monarchs that I'm under - each one is very different - and tell you what I've learned, and what my opinion is.
~~GUILD GOLDENSWORD~~ monarch Dr Goldensword on Thistledown, Pierce Goldensword on Morningthaw
Doc is my friend and has been since day one that I met him in Lin. He has been there for me through thick and thin - RL, ingame, otherwise, etc. - and he's as loyal to his subjects as they are to him. He's a great monarch because he's involved with his followers via ingame chat, the use of this board and our allied clans' boards. He's a great monarch because he wants the best for each of his vassals Larq/Ilu, Bo Dacious, Bard Bowsun, Grey Fox, and their followers (i.e. Vasco). Though the clan is small, it is very tight-knit. He's also a good leader because he lets us step up and lead, too. When he's hunting/fighting, he keeps an eye out for us and asks us if we're interested in the places he fights, taking us there if we are; he asks us about the loot that he picks up, always thinking of us first (hehehe, although he'll say that we don't ever need any of these things, we are all very grateful).
~~ACADEMY OF THE MAGI~~ monarch Burningman
Moj is great because he's a friend first to his allegiance friends and followers. He gets involved with them, keeps his eye out for them. A lover of chat, Moj always takes a moment from his busy fights to say "hey," even when he's deluged with tells. He gets involved with other clans, too. Unlike a lot of other high level monarchs that we see around more and more now that do not want to give aid to lower-level characters (i.e. the movements to be paid for buffs), Moj and his followers always are happy to lend a helping hand to those who need it; it's even in the AoM creed [GG needs one, too, btw]. And if you ever get the opportunity to talk to him in one of his silly moments, he's really good at taking the edge off of a stressful moments and making you laugh.
~~BEARS BRIGADE~~ monarch Ursus Major
I do not have a lot of direct contact with Ursus Major, but he's a really good monarch, too. And I know this because of who his direct vassals are; Slotknife, for example (Sigh's patron). He chooses very outgoing, allegiance-minded folk to help him lead his bears forward, whether forging questing alliances with other allegiances as he has with GG and AoM both, or organizing quests like the famous V Ammy quests that Slots and Co. has been known to lead. One of the things that, especially right now, speaks to me about him and his monarchy is that, when things are slow, he really wants the monarchy to be involved with kicking things up, putting the spark back into things... a lot of monarchs don't do that.
~~BLURRIANS~~ monarch Wren the Blurry
The Blurrians are 1200+ members strong, so it can be difficult to have a relationship directly with the monarch simply because of its size. But, I have spoken to Wren on several occassions and she is very approachable. Not only that, but she realizes that she has members who want to be a part of the way that the organization is run, so she gets them involved with the daily changing MOTD, monthly meetings, message boards, etc., and she'll respond to emails, too. Where a monarchy this size can be daunting because it *can* be impersonal and uncaring, this is not the case. The Blurrians really run themselves because they are involved at whatever level they want to be.
I ask again: What makes a good monarch?
* A good monarch is not made by the loot that he/she passes down to his/her subjects.
* A worthy ruler is not made because he/she followed an uber template.
A good monarch possesses each of the things that the people I've just profiled have. A good monarch...
* Cares
* Respects/appreciates his/her followers
* Wants followers to get involved
* Communicates
* Is available on some level (whether via @tells, message boards, what have you) to all of his/her followers
Consequently, I also think that these things make good patrons (although, as for availability, a good patron is involved personally with his/her vassal).
