I havent the slightest idea what the noise could be. What year is your car? If you say there is smoke coming from a certain part of the engine, open up the hood and take a look.

As far as the price your dealer gave you, it sounds more than reasonable. I paid nearly that for my timing belt replacement alone. And as far as valve seals go, I understand they can cost you just as much, if not more.

Again, figure the year of your car, plus mileage, and what you could get for it if you sold. Might not be worth it to sink all that $$ into a car that is on its way out. Then again, not everyone has money for a new car.
