The smell does NOT mean it needs to be replaced. Rotten egg smel is sulfur. You probably got a tank of gas with too much sulfur in it or even your oil could have too high of sulfur content. The smell means the converter is actually doing its job. That is what everyone complained about when converters became mandatory along with use of unleaded gas. Reformulation of gas cured the problem.
