The Jiv'ital, having been created; using DNA of an already existant line of mammals, insects, etc.; and not evolved, do believe that there is a higher life form out there. Not a god, but simply a higher life form. An ancient alien race that created all lower species then died or vanished, or are too complex to even notice.
They call these The Jiyu, and if something undesired were to happen, they would blame it on the meddling Jiyu.
If something good was too happen, though, they would also lay the blame on the Jiyu, not believing in good or evil.

They have no space travel of their own, and instead will sometimes attatch themselves to the outer sides of space crafts using their tails. If they have one.
Jiv'ital could sometimes be seen floating lifeless in space, having lost their grip and gone into a state of hibernation that allows them to survive nearly anything.

The experiment was titled Water bear, because the scientist wished to create a sentient species that had the survival skill of the water bear, thus making a creature that could do jobs a human could not, but the experiment failed when the Jiv'ital went into hibernation instead of getting jobs done when temperatures proved fatal for humans...
Temperatures as low -272ºC (i.e. almost absolute zero) or as high as 151ºC; X-ray radiation 1000x times the human lethal dose; high vacuum - conditions that the Jiv'ital in the state of hibernation could all handle.

((Curse the meddling Jiyu, I am making no sense today...))
