Subject: Any rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.......

Everyone's favorite crack - smoking porn freak has returned!

It's been quite a while, hasn't it? Between personal life, work, and my little game design project, I haven't had much time for the internet. Recently though, I've been scouting the web in search of RM2K sites in preparation for the eventual release of my demo. I thought I had lost all my old bookmarks, but lo and behold, I found them on backup disk I didn't even remember I had, and this board and many old favorites were among them.

Anyway, how's everyone here doing these days? For that matter, who's still around and who's vanished?

Hmmm ....... I hope you don't mind if I indulge in some ramblings. I haven't written any in a long time, and I'm feeling a bit nostalgic at the moment. :-) And AWAAAAAAAAAY we go .......

1.) About a month and half or so ago, I finally decided to stop just talking about it and actually get off my ass and build that new PC. It actually turned out to a be a lot of fun and far easier than I thought it would be, despite some annoying complications that were bound to come up along the way. It's pretty darn nice too --- P4 2.8 Ghz, 512 Mb PC2700 DDR RAM (planning to upgrade with at least another gig soon), 120 GB hard drive, and lots of other goodies. I've had fun tweaking it and playing around with it in general, and I must say the thing runs absolutely marvelously.

One little annoyance, however. My boot and shut down times aren't good for a computer of this level. Someone told me that Windows 2000 Pro (the OS I'm using) can take a while to start up, but I remember that right after I installed it, it started up very quickly. Unfortunately, I don't recall at what point it started bogging down. Anyone have any thoughts and/or suggestions? I've defragged, disabled all unnecessary startups, and run untilies galore. I guess the next step would be playign around with the BIOS, but I've never done that before and I'm a little bit nervous and not even entirely sure where to start. If anyone can help at all, it would be greatly appreciated.

2.) As I mentioned, I'm still working on my little amatuer consule - style RPG made in RPG - Maker 2000 (RM2K for short). I'm enjoying it, but it's turned out to be a lot more difficult and time - consuming than I thought it would be. Part of it is working around the inherent limitations of RM2K. It's not like it's the only game-making software out there, but it IS the most user friendly and the fastest (for making RPG's, anyway). Other game-makers are either pathetically underpowered, or overly complicated and time - consuming. Sure, I could use Sphere or something like that, but even if you don't count the time it would take to learn the scripting language, it would still take forever and a day to make anything decent.

Anyway, despite a few rather major setbacks (all my files being wiped out at one point, etc), at present I seem to be moving towards actually releasing a demo of my game. I don't suppose anyone would consider playtesting it for me?

I ask this for several reasons. One, eveyone here is pretty familiar with RPG's, and as far as I know, you all have good tastes in that regard. Two, people here are mature and intelligent, unlike the vast majority of those in the RM2K community. Three, it's good to hear from the perspectives of those who aren't familiar with the software.

3.) I made a couple of derogatory comments about the a large percentage of the RM2K community above. Wonder why? Let me give you some insight into the wonderful world of RM2K message boards .......

Poster 1: I like the new (fill-in-the-blank) game.
Poster 2: WTF? Hey, he's got a different opinion from us!
Poster 3: Fucking bastard! Let's get him!
Poster 2: UR game sux. It's gay!
Poster 1: Excuse me? I just happen to like it, that's all.
Poster 2: Shut up! It suXoRz! U R gay!
Poster 3: Yeah! Stupid nOOb! Yer gay!
Poster 2: GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY!!!
Poster 3: You sure told him!
Poster 2: woot! I R da spiff!
Poster 4: Hey, can I flame too?

That's why I quit frequenting those places a long while back. You should beware of any boards or chat rooms where the words "newbie," "noob," "lamerz," "roXoRz," or "suXorz" pop up regularly. You can find some decent conversation, but not much. In other words, these place are infested with trolls. On the plus side, they make me appreciate places like this even more.

4.) What's everyone's favorite beer? (For those of you who like beer, anyway) Mine tends to vary, but at the moment it is Stella Artois, an absolutely wonderful Belgian beer. Of course, Belgium is one of the countries known for making great beer. Lot's of other good things come from there too, such as my girlfriend, for example. :-)

5.) Favorite non - alcholic drink? I know my answer is plaing and rather boring but it's ice tea. For some reason, I've gone off soft drinks entirely. But then, I've gone of junk food too (with the exception of Fritos, for some odd reason). It's not that I'm on a health kick; I just no longer find the stuff appetizing at all. Wierd, huh?

6.) Any thoughts on Longhorn? I for one don't think it's anything to get excited over. The multiple - desktops feature is kind of nice, but I've used one via a third - party graphics driver, and it's not anything I'd be willing to spend money on (same with Sidebar). Microsoft is touting a new filing system, but one has to wonder how much of an improvement it will actually be. Of course, if MS continues it's trend of cutting support to older OS's, most of us may end up using it anyway. Unless, of course, Linux becomes a more viable alternative - which could well happen
in the meantime.

7.) I'll stop and lucky number 7 and spare you anything further ....... FOR NOW! (evil grin) Err ....... anyway, it's good to be back.
