While I might applaud the effort to bring back one of the best RPGs to hit the shores of everywhere outside of Japan, I'm sorry to say that I'll have to pass on signing this petition. Considering my past love affair with FFVII (being the ex-webmaster of "For the Love of Tifa" and all), some might question why. Well, I have my reasons.

First, I must say that I have no problems with remakes. I was a big fan of Lunar back in the Sega CD days and it brought me no end of joy to finally see one of my favorite series finally get some appreciation and a chance at a wider audience with its remakes on the PSOne. I was happy to see Chrono Trigger come to the PSOne, mainly because I never had a SNES back in the day ("Sega!") and if I tried to get the SNES cart nowadays, I'd probably destroy my already tapped bank account. That said, I will now state that I do not feel the same towards Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII was easily one of the top selling games (if not the top seller) for the PSOne. It came down to basically anyone who owned a PSOne at the time (and for several years after) had the game because it was a must own. As such, there were millions of copies sold and I doubt there's anyone who owns a PSOne or PS2 that hasn't touched the game. So for me, the masses have already experienced the game and can go back to pop it in their console if they'd like to experience it again.

Now this is where I'm pointed to the fact that the author of this petition would like the game remade because they feel it was incomplete. Apparentally, there is some hubbub about wanting Aerith brought back to life and a few holes tied up in the story/events. Again, I cannot agree with this line of thinking. I believe that the story and ending of FFVII should be left as they were for one reason: debate. I'm not talking about the seemingly eternal "Aerith-vs-Tifa: Which one is better/loved Cloud/sluttier/using plastic surgery/this space for rent?" one. I'm talking about people discussing "What happened at the end?" or "Who did Cloud really love?". I don't want Square or any of the design team coming out and saying "Well your interpretion of the events is touching, but you're WRONG!". Like any good song or film, I want to walk away with my own ideas of what I just experienced. I don't want someone dictating "This is exactly how it was/is/will be.". As such, I like the open-endedness of FFVII. It spawned a lot of debate and brought together a lot of different people from around the world. :-)

Finally, I think it's time Square moved forward rather than back. I mean, their last string of projects have been mostly releases of FF games on the PSOne that saw little light outside of Japan (and a few emulators). It's time to move on and break new ground (which given their merger with Enix, I hope will be starting to show by Xmas 2004).

Good luck with your endeavour. Etc..

- Aaron (wants to mug the Square guy he keeps seeing smoking in an FFVII jacket)
