Laguna in FF8 uses a machinegun, and his limit break involves through grenades at the enemy and swinging from a cable while straffing them before the grenades went off (it was pretty cool, actually). Irvine and Vincent both use various forms of firearms as their weapons, and as you mentioned, there was Barret's gun-arm. FF7 and FF8 both had a lot of modern and even futuristic technology in them. Hell, look at Midgar and Eshtar.

I don't think that we need to up the modern and/or sci-fi elements in the Final Fantasy series. In fact, I really wouldn't want to see it get more modern than FF8, which, in my opinion, was pushing it. FF has always had sci-fi elements mixed in with the traditional fantasy --- it's one of it's trademarks. But if you start raising the sci-fi factor too much, you lose the feel of the series.

What I would like to see are more good sci-fi RPG's. How about some Star Wars, Gundam, or Shadowrun RPG's? Xenogears is a great example of a sci-fi RPG. Why can't we see more like that?

One thing I do agree with you on is that the sword is a bit over-used in fantasy RPG's. I don't think it should be thrown out, but it would be nice to see a lead character that wields an axe, spear, etc......something other than a sword. That was one of the things I liked about Zindane.

I have to confess, however, that the lead character in the RPG I'm working on uses a sword as his primary weapon. (sheepish grin) A katana, actually. I wanted to use something else, but the more I thought about it, the more I couldn't find anything else that fit his style. Also, the fact that his weapon is a katana is an important element in the story, so.....
