Subject: The Apple convention in NZ.

Today I had the pleasure of registering myself into and entering the Apple Convention, a convention brought here just so the guys at Apple could flaunt their new G4 computer range. Apart from entering all the contests and snatching as many free Macromedia Trial CDs and Hewlett Packard pens as possible, I actually paid attention throughout the thing, and learnt a few things. Here are some pros and cons of what I saw:

Pros:

1. The Powerbook 500MHZ G4 made me smile somewhat, becuse I've always been a big lover of laptops and that one was especially nice. Almost as nice as the Sony/VAIO laptops in the Sony Showroom store. (Despite having no in-built camera and being about 50% wider and taller.)

2. iDVD impressed me with it's ease of use, and configurable system, it made me wish I had a DVD burner. Also, having the usually slow, software-driven MPEG-2 encoding time brought down (from 25x the length of the movies to 2x!) really made me look twice.

3. They gave away a lot of free Pens.

4. The 22" LCD screen that comes with the G4 Cube, although having a slight ghost effect, was very nice to view DVDs on.

5. The guys at the Macromedia stall handed out copies of full 30-day trial CDs. On each CD there's trial copies of over 12 really expensice multimedia programmes... all of which I have registration codes for. Therefore, I am technically illegally recieveing, for free, a CD worth over $25,000 - $30,000 How nice of Macromedia to bestow upon me these gifts. ^_^

6. Palm gave me a really cool aluminium pen that made me the envy of all my multimedia classmates.

7. A friend of mine recieved a Macromedia Flash Ball, so we had fun rolling it down the spiral staircase from the fourteenth floor... Several times.

8. I'd really like a 733MHZ model G4, it looks quite nice, in short. I'm still a right-mouse-button man, though.

Cons:

1. MacOS X has certain graphical attributes that, although looking really nice, would significantly slow one down when trying to multitask at a rapid rate.

2. Still only one mouse button... sigh...

3. The new speakers, although having decent-ish sound, look like they were crafted when the guys at the plastic factory had fun trying to make assorted sex-toys with the leftover run-offs.

4. I'm fully aware that the G4 chip is hugely faster than a Pentium 4 chip, but the way Apple is rubbing their faces in it makes me sick. It's like KFC doing those ads about Macdonalds being less popular.

5. The Apple pens were multicoloured and looked really gross. They were the only pens I didn't take.

6. Although my name is down, I don't honestly think that I'll win the iMac they're giving away.

7. The latest styles of iMac look as though they were designed by heroin addicts trying to go straight by drinking heavily.

8. The first stylish HP pen I stole didn't write properly so I had to steal another one. (Only a minor hassle, but I found it annoying.)

9. The Xtra Internet booth didn't actually contain a computer connected to the Net. What's with that?!

And just as another little interesting observation: Apple announced that their new G4 chips could handle 5.5 Gigaflops. Now, although that is a very valid computing term, (meaning the chip can handle up to 5.5 billion operations per second) it really does sound like they're trying to take the piss out of computer geeks who know all the terminologies. I mean, c'mon! Gigaflops?!

:)
