Subject: Why did my friend's rabbit die?

I wonder if anyone can suggest a reason why my friend's apparently healthy 8 month old dwarf rabbit died. He seemed OK in the morning, but an hour later he was lying on his side, apparently paralysed, as he flopped when she picked him up. He was rushed to the vet but died on the way. There was no sign of any injury, disease, vomiting, diarrhoea, runny nose etc. The vet said it would not be worth the cost of an autopsy to find out what happened. I am thinking maybe a spider bite? The rabbit lived outdoors in a hutch with a female guinea pig which is still alive and well, as is the new rabbit they bought to replace the one that died. We're in NSW, Australia, and it hasn't been very cold here lately, though the hutch is made of steel and the only bedding, apparently, is newspaper (!) which the rabbit would tear up each day.

Has anyone any ideas? My friend would like to know as she does not wish to experience another tragedy.
