Your friend's mother might be allergic to the rabbit - puffy eyes are usually a symptom of allergies. If she is allergic to rabbits, she is probably also allergic to other furry creatures. It is extremely unlikely that a person would catch a virus from a rabbit since viruses are usually specific for certain species. It is possible for bacteria to be transmitted from pets to people but simple good hygeine (such as washing your hands after handling your pets) should prevent this from happening.
