As far as I know, with the possible exception of ringworm (and if the bunny doesn't have it, it can't spread it) there is nothing to catch from bunnies. It sounds like your friend's mother may have an allergy to the rabbit. This is not a disaster if the rabbit is kept clean and brushed (I use a baby's brush) and the mother does not do the cleaning or brushing. If she pats the rabbit she should wash her hands thoroughly afterwards, and be aware that rabbit hair is so soft it will float around almost invisible, so she should avoid the rabbit as much as possible. Of course the rabbit may not be the culprit - there are plenty of environmental pollutants which could be causing the mother's puffy eyes and she would be advised to get herself checked out by a competent GP.
