Full and open debate needed

THE plan by North Tyneside Council to build a new leisure centre behind houses in Walkerville is an important issue in our community.

It is important because the access road to the new centre will go through Walkerville, where we already have traffic and road safety problems caused by the heavy lorries using the area as a short cut.

Local people are worried that their lives will be made worse by this new development.

The people of North Tyneside are entitled to good quality leisure facilities, but the people of Walkerville are equally entitled to have their views listened to because it is their quality of life that will be affected if this plan goes ahead. We hope there will be a full and open debate of all the issues. That will be in everybody's interests.

In our opinion, co-operation and consultation will achieve far more good than the noisy confrontational tactics recently used by local Labour politicians.

Their aggressive style worries many local residents. They fear that the real issues will be forgotten as Labour councillors with scores to settle hijack the debate.

And where were those "concerned" Labour councillors when these plans were first announced several months ago? They have been very quiet on this issue.

Their sudden interest now wouldn't be connected to the local elections due to be held in a few weeks' time would it?

ROLAND G BEARE,

Walkergate Liberal Democrat FOCUS Team.
