Subject: Dwarven Culture- Part 1

Schoolchildren in the Crac'anian Empire are frequently taught that the Dwarven Kingdom of Hilstrach is like the kingdom of New Crac'an before the Great Civil War or Cortag and the Empire. In that time, New Crac'an laid claim to all the land between the Pass of Nations in the west and the border with the Pekiran Empire in the east. However, only the western half of New Crac'an was settled, the eastern half being the sun-baked Solar Plains. As far as most people know, all of the dwarves live in the Five Cities in eastern Hilstrach, with 50,000 in the capital at Dwarven Hill and 100,000 spread throughout the other Four. They believe that western Hilstrach between Orchame and the garrison at Sirus' Finger is empty and unsettled. In reality, a full 150,000 other dwarves fill that area. These dwarves are members of the Clans.
Dwarven religion has 7 virtues and 7 vices. Those who follow the virtues end up in the dwarven 'heaven,' which is underground. Those who follow the vices end up in the dwarven 'hell,' which is in the sky. As an extension of this philosophy, Volpures are believed to be the agents of the 'Devil.' City dwarves tend to treat this as superstitious nonsense, and can tolerate Volpures, but the western Clans, who live conviniently in the hills below the mountains where there live villages of Volpures, treat it very seriously. A rite of passage for young dwarves in the Clans is going off with a band of other young dwarves seeking recognition as an adults and hunting Volpures in the mountains. Hilstrach law classifies Volpures in the same category as rats- vermin. There are no laws against hunting them, and are bounties in many places.
In recent years, dwarves have gotten along better with elves than in the past, and in modern days, most elven soldiers bear dwarven-forged weapons. There are, contrary to what most people would think, more elves in the Elven Kingdom than dwarves in Hilstrach. This is due to the fact that elves are less warlike, have more farmland, and were much luckier in their choice of places to settle than the dwarves. However, this sitution has begun to change.
The dwarves, or more precisely the Halifain family of merchants, have engaged in a trade war with the prominant merchants of Ilo. This has not affected the military standing between the two nations- indeed, Ilo and Hilstrach have forged a military alliance so strong that the nations of Herbaria and Crac lying between the two have been forced to enter into binding agreements with the two to remain independant.
