Subject: Species Description - Dagaan

Okay... I think it was all just too long maybe? o.o;

So... I'm sixteen now, and I've edited the Dagaan species just a tad since I originally created them five years ago.... haha. I hope I didn't forget anything in the species or character description. -_-;; I probably did though.

Species Description
Dagaan

singular: Dagaan; plural: Dagaani

Height at Shoulder
5'4" - 5'8" (add another 1'3" - 1'6" for total height)

Colouration
Fur: They may be any natural shade of brown or reddish brown, ginger, dark orange to pale pumpkin, grey, or cream. They rarely have markings or patterns, but it is possible. Their fur is always very dark at the end of their muzzle.Rare/Other fur colourations: Dagaani may also have completely black, or completely white fur, but both of these are very rare. Female Dagaani may carry a calico coat pattern. This is not rare, but only happens in females.
Skin: Their skin is the same colour as their fur -- but the colour is much more diluted.
Wings and Tails: Their wings and tails, in almost all cases, follow the same colour as their coat. Exceptions: Blacks may be born with either black wings and tails, or golden wings and tails. Whites may be born with white wings and tails, or silver wings and tails. Other - if a Dagaan has a blood relative, no more than one generation behind them, with golden or silver wings and tail, there is a very small chance that they will get that gene and be born with the same.
Manes:The manes of males' are always dark brown or black. The only exception is Whites, in which case the mane is a very pale brown.

Species Description
Height: 6'7" to 7'2"
Wingspan: 15 to 20 ft.
Eyesight: Dagaani are comfortable both during the day and at night, and have keen vision even in low light.
Various Scientific Study and whatnot: Their species appears to be evolved from Avians, and are slowly becoming more Mammalian. Their young (chicks) are born live, but do not suckle, and are instead fed regurgitated or pre chewed food. Dagaani are omnivorious, but primarily eat meat.
Appearance: Bipedal. Their torso, covered in short fur, appears "humanoid", though it is longer than a human's would be. Their arms are also "humanoid". The fur gets slightly longer as it nears the elbow, and becomes "feathered". Their forearms and hands are hairless. About their waist, their fur gets thicker and starts getting longer. Dagaan legs are avian, covered by dense feathered fur which can go to the "knee", or right down to their "feet". Their legs are strong and large, and equipped with large talons. All Dagaani have a thick ruff of fur around their long, muscular necks, called "manes". This is perhaps the only way to tell a male Dagaan from a female, as males have a slightly larger mane, and the males' mane is darker than the rest of their fur. Dagaan heads appear vaguely canine. They have wide skulls, and their eyes -- though set generally on the front of their face, are far apart. Their eyes are very avian --- large, bright black orbs, calculating and cold. Luckily, their canine faces are fully equiped with very expressive mouth and brow muscles. They have a wide, and rather boxy, muzzle, which is long and downward slanting -- it appears perfectly canine, but close inspection reveals that they have nose slits surrounded by dark fur, rather than a nose pad. Their ears are wide shelled and pointed, edged with small tufts of feathery fur. (For the basic shape of their skulls, the closest comparison to any actual dogs would be to imagine a Great Dane -- now widen its skull, more like a boxer's. Elongate the muzzle a bit, and make it wider as well. Imagine on some flews that aren't as droopy as a typical hound's, and of course don't forget what a Dagaan's nose and ears are like -- and you've got it.) Their tails are -- best put -- horse-like. That is, basically long hair. They often have then cropped and/or bound.
Dagaani are large creatures -- tall and muscular, with quite a large wing span. You won't find very many Dagaani that are fond of buildings because of this. Also due to their wings, chairs and.. well, most furniture made for bipedals, are down right impractical.

Species Temperment
Dagaani are very bold, hard headed creatures, by nature. Though extremely loyal, they are not very trusting. They can learn to be peaceful, but never neutral --- they are highly vengeful creatures, and act on it. They tend to be rebellious as they serve as both judge and jury, deciding for themselves on their own prinicples what's "right" and "wrong". They rarely pass up a chance to fight. They tend to be very intelligent and fairly quick learners. They learn better through actual experience, and enjoy travel. They tend to be very private, though they enjoy the company of close family and friends. Their companions take up a large part of their life, and a lonely Dagaan is definitely not a happy one. Solitary Dagaani often try to fill the void with excessive fighting and training.

Home Planet
Daraquon
(Daraquon was a "living planet". Her physical form -- the planet -- was destroyed in a battle for her between her two native children, the Dagaani and the Tufaki.)

Culture and Society

Family Life Dagaani live in family groups. A household usually consists of only the parents and their children, but aunts and uncles and their families, and grandparents, often live nearby or even in adjoined houses. An adult, mateless Dagaan will more often reside with their parents or one or more of their siblings, rather than by themselves.
Mating and Marriage Dagaani's closest thing to a mating ritual is similar to the dating of humans. They don't have any sort of marriage ceremony though, so a mate can just up and leave the other whenever they want with no legal bindings or anything of the sort. But as Dagaani are all rather clingy sorts when it comes to relationship, and usually put a lot of trust into eachother, this rarely happens. It does though, from time to time, usually with a particularly war-oriented or untrustful sorts.
Military During the times before the great war and Daraquon's ultimate physical destruction, most Dagaan children were sent away to training camps for the greater part of the childhood and adolosence. It sounds like a rather cold thing to do to some species'/cultures, but it was perfectly normal for Dagaani. War was what they were best at, and what they instinctually loved, so it would make sense to hone it. Military was also one of the few ways to hold order among the rebellious natured creatures. Before Daraquon's destruction though, a large number of the children were sent away in pods to other planets.
New Age of Dagaani The majority of the Dagaani that are still alive are made up of these children that were sent away, most of them too young to remember much of their culture. The minority of their race now are the war-trained survivors who escaped before the world collapsed, varying in age from Dagaani Elders, to young adults. Though many of the transferred children are the same age as, or in some cases even older than some of the war survivors are, these two groups are seperated into generations --- the war survivors being first generations, and the transferred children being second generations. They seperate themselves like that because the transferred children tend to differ greatly from the survivors. The Second Generations tend towards one of two extremes --- they're very peaceful and not war-oriented at all, or they're absolutely wild and rebellious without the proper training or discipline. First Generations find them odd --- and the older the First Generation, the less tolerance they have for the Second Generations.
Magic and Technology The Dagaan race bears little to no magic whatsoever. They much perfer technology, or natural remedies -- they feel that those are far more tangible, and thus more understandable and practical, things. Most of the First Generations dislike, are wary of, or plain scared of magic. Again, the older they are, the less tolerance they have of it -- the youngest ones usually don't have much of a problem with it, though they still perfer technology and natural elements over it. With Second Generations, opinions on technology, natural remedies, and magic vary completely from individual to individual.
