When we had a telephone connection, we only paid 20$ a month for a phone line, but we got the internet free from my school. After a while, the incredible slowness drove us nuts, so we got a cable connection.

Now me and my sister pay 300$ a year, and my parents pay about 20$. That is for the connection to be on two computers. We are connected 24 hours a day, and even with the telephone connection we had unlimited time to be online. So all these programs have no effect on what I do online at all.

As for the free ISPs, there are a lot of free ones offered around here, but they all have certain stipulations, like limited time and ad banners.

If you connect to a local company (by telephone modem) the connection is free, but you still pay for internet time. If you connect to a far away company by telephone, you have to pay every time you connect as if you made a long-distance phone call.

My cuz connects to a company that is accross the street from him, but he has to pay a long distance fee b/c he lives right on the border so the company is in a different city! If the company was in his city, he could probably dial-up for free.

I hope that clears it all up for you :)
