Excellent sleuthing lcs!
Just by chance my PCB layout is somewhat larger than the standard ones and I have the SX oriented at right angles to the 4066 with the resonator as far as possible from everything else. I had noticed that the 4066 was very susceptible to interference if the gate inputs were left floating but much more stable when driven at TTL levels.
