great job LCS,

I have layed out, on protel, Canton5.0 on a double sided pcb. Dimensions 100 mm x 140 mm. I did omit Canton's audio circuit and replace it with the Auto Detect circuit by Kenny. Limited space on the board sent me in this direction. I will explain further why my space was limited. I had the board manufactured and have built the unit.
Just fired it up earlier in the week. PIC16F84A and Dave's revised code with a few mods for audio and rem'd out a few lines for Piu's board. Thanks Sakman and Tom. I used RCA jacks and cables. Works well.I wanted to trouble shoot the board before installing in a VCR. I may just package the unit up and use cables. I few adjustments for picture quality and I added an inductor to the Crystal circuit. Jens
page had a mod mentioned so I added pads to the required trace, wired in a jumper at first and added the inductor after. Difficult to lock at first. Works perfectly now.

I placed all ground and power traces on one side of the board and all the signal traces on the other. Another point I should add is I ran separate signal and power grounds. Now for commercial products this is unheard of but I have designed for military applications and the seperate signal and ground planes are a MUST. Cuts down the noise considerabilly.

I would have to agree totally. Small package isn't always better. I have the major IC's spread as far as possible from one another, and the power supply as far away as was reasonable. Please no one take offense. EMI and RF are a bear to deal with. I also grounded the crystal can as Dave recommended in his expermental design.

I found a vendor to etch a production board for me. I have tried etching at home and have had limited luck. I was provided a high quailty, double sided PCB with vias, thru hole plating, silk screen and solder mask for $26.00. Well worth the money, in my opinion, for the complicated layout I used. He is over seas but is certified for all the major quality requirements. A point to make, I do not sell for the company, I ran into them by dumb luck on a net search.I will provide the web site if any one is interested.

Thankyou all for your help.
Guillet
