I've been also out for a while.

There is a problem: in some cases the AGC wont cooperate with descrambler. Some IF ICs just do not accept any hack (not even additional capacitors); I came just two days ago across a problem like this.
First, make sure you have the proper amplitude at input. Then, make sure you have tryed to ad (or change) the capacitor at the proper pin of IF IC (some have double filter, two pins for that). The AGC hack is Poter's discovery, what I did (being, like you, an 'analog' guy) was to provide a hardware solution to adapt it to the TV, Cable Adaptor, VCR... In one case it didn't work (it didn't work to add caps, no mater what I tryed, so it is the way IF IC is working), but normaly it should help. Try and tell us your results, maybe we'd be able to improve something.
