That's great!
The big satisfaction in reverse engineering is seeing the protectors' weapons turned against them. All the circuit would need is a pullup resistor (say 4k7) to ensure it's sampling by default unless driven low by the PIC. The original Jerrold design uses a dual monostable (4528) to drive this circuit IE when to sample and for how long in relation to the Vsync but I didn't get to observe it in action before the box was disabled.
