My understanding is that there is some delay between when the the voltage is applied to the diodes and when attenuation actually starts or stops. I believe that the only difference between the attenuation siganl and the normal signal is the exact timing, although it is possible that the normal signal would work fine. I think I did you the normalsignal originally in tests.

Ther eisn't any additional code for the Maxi3chip, just turning the attenuator on and off.

The input signal is not being modified, it is being restored to the original. The IF does not know or care what has happened before. The IF adjusts the bottom of the sync to the proper DC level by adjusting the gain in the IF and RF sections. Since the sync is normal again, it doesn't have any problem.
