The overlay is the original way I planned it but after checking voltages I reversed the output capacitor - this would vary according to the application and because the DC voltage difference is very small probably doesn't matter with a bridging resistor fitted. Use the overlay.
A crystal will work perfectly and it's more stable in terms of ageing and temperature related frequency drift.
NOTE: If you use an oscillator module, you'll need to provide a means of disconnecting it from the SX when programming in-circuit. The TTL outputs of the modules don't like the 12.5V programming voltage and self-destruct but crystals & resonators are not harmed by it.
