The 'release' part is the gray area where rosters are concerned. To a lot of coaches, a signed roster during that calendar year almost commits a player to a team unless there is some sort of 'release'. That is, when coaches start getting their ASA/NSA/PONY/USSSA rosters after January 1st--and begin to have their players sign it---the signature binds you to that team. I've never heard of June 1st as being some sort of cut-off date, but that may very well be the case.

I know that if a kid came to me who had signed a roster for Team X, I would want some sort of effort (either by that kid's parent or via my own attempt) to appease the situation. I doubt most coaches would stand in the way of such a 'sign-off'.

Many coaches and organizations hold try-outs in the Fall for the following year. Here in the east, you almost have to. After the try-outs, coaches/orgs will invariably produce a roster of the same calendar year. If it's ASA, it'll generally have a 20__ in the corner, and the player and parent are supposed to believe it binds you for the following year because all the coach has to do is fill in '02.

I can see where some people would have a problem with that. ASA has often changed their rosters over the past few years, necessitating a new roster being signed in the next calendar year.

I tend to look at things as coaches would in this regard. Getting players is a tough task. Turning kids away is even tougher. Basically, you're asking a parent/player to sign and then honor that signature for the following year. We all know that there are a lot of scumbag coaches who'll try to steal kids, no matter the time of year. Signing the roster is meant to be some deterrent to that, and any player getting 'antsy' about joining some other team.

Sorry for the long answer. It's a sore spot that I see both sides of the argument having merit. In essence, I doubt a roster you signed in September '01 for '02 carries any weight.
