Subject: Why did my bird die

my 6 yr.old cocktiel went to sleep fine the other night. He had a bite of my roast beef gravy and mashed potatoes. We had a fire in the fireplace that night and had him out for two hrs. He started getting nippy and I put him away. seemed fine ecept the next morning he lied dead at the bottom of the cage. temp was normal in the room had food and water. any thought from anyone on what caused this Very Sad in IL.
