Subject: Wonderful people

It's time to retell a story from half a century ago:
While I was a member of the tuba section in 1952, my wife Shirley developed cancer. The exploratory surgery to see how far it had progressed had to be done at Hopkins during caesarean delivery of my daughter Carol.
Everyone in the band chipped in to pay for this expensive
process (I still remember Joe Riccobene collecting contributions furtively so I weouldn't notice), and were overwhelmingly supportive during this trying time; I was allowed to stay off tours during the ensuing months, and when Shirley finally was taken and I fell apart, our people granted me emergency leave in my absence, so I wouldn't be guilty of desertion!
On a happier note,Carol survived, and is now a happy and healthy mother, and I have great-grandchildren!
Field Band members past and present, I can never thank you enough -- You are the finest friends a guy could have!
