He Still Lives!
(In Memoriam: The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.)
(For Coretta Scott King)
There was a Man who walked not long ago,
Hated by other men who wished his soul
Eternal deprivation, and, for show,
Rigours of shame – but none could mar his role!
Eventual death even dread fate forgives –
Vouched for by noble mortals, he still lives!
Mostly we don’t observe what he’d pursue!
Although we come together once a year –
Relish his name; extol him in review;
Take hope in all those truths which he made clear.
Instilled within our souls, for love and peace,
None of his splendid views should know surcease.
Let us keep on towards that mountain top,
Using his strength to guide us on the way.
There’ll come the time we’ll reach it – let’s not stop!
Heaven will help us celebrate that day.
Each forward footstep – firm, or otherwise –
Really promotes his journey to the skies.
King, among modern men; of prescient mind;
Inspiring friend, and gentler foe, alike!
Noble were all his views – none were unkind!
God was his guide, who urged for peaceful strike.
Just when you feel too tired to proceed,
Remember that one step extends his deed.
