While snowbound in Santa Rosa, NM on April 25,'97, and with the whole town without electricity because of the late storm, I ate at the only open restaurant, and observed a young girl, obviously there because school was closed and no sitter available, helping her waitress mother. She made a delightful impression on me, and I hope you like her too.
Carmenita
Howling blizzard, out of season,
Blowing minds and numbing reason,
Closing highways, snapping power lines;
Halting all within its confines;
With its storm clouds glowering , frightful,
Caused a meeting quite delightful
With a gamin little server
All aglow with childish fervor;
Little Carmenita,
Helping Mamacita.
Mayan daughter, hair like midnight,
Glossy in that cloud caused twilight,
Maybe ten and not yet knowing
Life gives pain with all its growing;
Chubby cheeked and set on pleasing,
So polite, and so unceasing,
Onyx eyed and shyly smiling
In a manner most beguiling.
Proudly Carmenita,
Helps her Mamacita,
Bussing tables, stacking dishes,
Filling stranded traveler's wishes;
Ice in glasses, table settings,
Staving off impatient frettings.
Cheerful voice and laugh like sunlight
Midst that murky, gloomy storm plight;
There to help, and wholly selfless.
Would the gods might let you stay just
Happy Carmenita,
Helping Mamacita !
