That usually the first thing that happens when a shock is received is that the jaw convulses? In other words, it would probably cause the dog to bear down harder on the arm.

Sounds like a good way to encourage the behavior to me. What association is the dog building? It makes no sense in training with the way he is using it. None.

On another note, I also happen to know in my own breed's history (as well as any molosser breed), that bull baiting was a common occupation. I can tell you more about it than you probably want to know.

My dogs haven't seen a bull in their life. Nor do I expect them to as my job type takes me to urban rather than rural areas. But I suppose since I show an interest in knowing all I can of breed history, I'm a bull baiter in your eyes.

The bloodhound people must really scare you. ;)
