What makes you think he was exaggerating (other than, perhaps, your disbelief that someone you respected could behave in an abusive way)?

He certainly never defended himself, in fact he got more and more "defensive" about the whole incident... even to the point of (apparently) deleting threads critical of him.

To my mind, his behavior points to guilt, not innocence
