They have questionable approaches to pit bulls. Last year (or the year before) their "Sheltering" magazine recommended that no shelter adopt out pit bulls. Until very recently, their site about dogfighting had the "chew with their front teeth and back teeth separately" myth. They still perpetuate the "bait dog" myth (oldtime dogmen did NOT, by all accounts, use "bait dogs"... it would have been like Mike Tyson practicing against a high school boxer... it proves nothing about fighting ability). This myth has now become both reality (cretins steal dogs and sic their pit bulls on them) and damaging untruth (any pit bull with any marks on it... even mange, which can look like dogbites... is assumed to have been in a fight and if it's timid, was assumed to be bait. ...and any shelter pit bull suspected of having been in a fight is generally first in line for the needle)

Many pit bull people do believe that the current hysteria about our dogs AND the concurrent rise in really bad pit bulls started when HSUS began their campaign against dogfighting. This interpretation holds that HSUS presented a "badass" image of pit bulls that attracted the horrific element that too often owns them now. Before then, pit bulls had become uncommon and dogfighting itself was fairly rare and confined to the "professionals" (and while we all agree that dogfighting is cruel and abusive, there IS a difference in the way old time "dogmen" behaved and treated their animals... though this may be more like a "good slave-owner/bad slave-owner" distinction.

So in exaggerating the badness of the breed, HSUS CAUSED an increase in what they were trying to combat.

Vicky Hearne, in BANDIT, talks about this.

Here's the HSUS site about dogfighting:
