Knox County Ohio urged to adopt breed bans by Dog Warden

Knox County Ohio Dog Warden Dave Cockrell is systematically visiting
villages, townships and cities in Knox County urging bans on pit bull type
dogs. In keeping with the ever-expanding list of dogs considered pit bulls
by the Ohio County Dog Warden's Association, the following breeds are
targeted for banning or extreme restrictions:

American Bulldog
American Pit Bull Terrier
American Staffordshire Terrier
Argentinean Mastiff/Dogo Argentino
Bull Terrier
Canary Dog
Olde English Bulldogge
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Any mix of any of the above breeds, and other breeds/types that conform to
the appearance of a pit bull in any way.

Cockrell has made his pitch to the following cities:

Fredericktown
Mount Vernon
Brinkhaven
Danville
Martinsburg

While these cites represent the largest population centers in Knox County,
smaller municipalities are also at risk:

Waterford, Ankenytown, Jelloway, Greer, Amity, Howard, Millwood, Gambier,
Bangs, Mt Liberty, Rich Hill, Brandon, Bladenburg, Centerburg and Artanna.

Fredericktown is considering drafting a breed ban in response to the Dog
Warden's request. The next meeting of the City Council appears to be slated
for March 25th.

Responsible dog owners are urged to do the following:

Forward this e-mail to responsible dog owners in Knox County, as their
cities may have already been approached and asked to draft restrictive
legislation.

Contact the Mayor of Fredericktown to voice your concerns about this narrow
approach to enacting community legislation. The best legislation is a
result
of cooperative dialogue between the groups that will be affected by
legislation, and that includes responsible dog owners:

Contact: Know County Dog Warden Dave Cockrell to urge him to adhere to the
mission statement of the Ohio County Dog Warden's Association, which
states:

"To promote effective, efficient, and humane dog control programs for the
health and safety of the public and their companion animals."

Breed bans are not effective, not efficient, and not humane, as they remove
cherished family pets from their homes based on phenotypic appearance
rather
than behavior.

Finally, every person who purchases a dog or kennel license in Ohio is
directly funding County Dog Wardens. As responsible dog owners in Ohio, is
this how you like to see your money spent?
